Very very bad
I bought this game because it sounded like fun. How wrong was I, I wish I'd have rented or borrowed it first because this game is just awful. I played if for about an hour and could no longer tolerate it. The game is that bad I didn't even complete it once before selling it. If there's one game you shouldn't buy it's this.
A good, solid game
This is a good game, this is a really good game with a great premise. This game does justice to the sub- Resident Evil `survival horror' genre.
I bought this game because I was looking for a good horror game to play and there's not too many on the market. The concept sounded good with - with it all been set in a high school. Most times, these games tend to be awful, but luckily I enjoyed this.
The two player aspect was a nice touch, and although it does suffer slightly from computer AI, if you play with a friend it can be quite fun. The graphics were also okay, if not stunning and I found the controls fairly easy going.
The high school setting is good and creepy with enough rooms for you to explore and remember your childhood memories. The only problem is that the game is a little short and really doesn't take too long to complete and to be honest, it isn't that hard.
The game owes a lot of the teen horror genre and homage's a lot of classic movies that you'll recognise - including most obviously, The Faculty - even has a character that looks like Josh Hartnett.
I also think this game has strong links to Resident Evil Code Veronica (it terms of feel) and Silent Hill (the dark is like the town turning to hell)
I recommend this game to anyone whose a fan of Silent Hill and Resident Evil who fancies slumming it with an easier game for a little while.
Survival fun.
Obscure is chilling only in a cheesey horror way. The game has some fantastic ideas especially the use of five characters, with various skills that will benefit you at different points in the game. The use of dark auras on some enemies that can be dispelled by light made for a nice touch too.
I personally prefer the kind of fear and storyline you usually get from a silenthill game but Obscure has got a certain atmosphere to it and a storyline that is fun to follow rather than enthralling. The use of a school as the setting - although not original - is a great idea and the surroundings make for great game play. I hadn't thought about it before reading other reviews on here but there is definitely a sense of slasher flick going on in Obscure that makes the game so damn fun to play!
There are some fab little attention to details that other games less often explore, for instance your weapons are capable of smashing windows, vending machines and for the sick at heart you can whack your team mates with the bat and get funny reactions.
I think the game was well worth playing and brightened up my Sunday the other day but as another reviewer said, this is not a lengthy challenge and if you were after a game as time consuming as Code Veronica you may be upset. Having said that the game is great fun and will shorten the wait between now and the next survival horror hit.
