FAB Collection
This is the album Saint Etienne would dearly love to have created themselves: it distills practically all their influences into one glorious folk/soul/prog/pop stew. Although the first disc is the more upbeat, the second contains some truly extraordinary tracks, and is the one I find more interesting; After hearing Julie Covington's absolutely stunning "My silks and fine arrays" I immediately sought the original album, and I will probably do the same for several others on this wonderful collection. Confined almost exclusively to the late 60s and early 70s, SE have managed to create a mix of tracks that exemplify "easy" yet have a distinct sonic ambience that transcends kitsch - there really isn't a cheesy track to be found. And SE have skilfully sequenced it with only the occasional extraneous vocal sample. Essential.
An embarrassment of riches
I just bought this on an impulse buy this weekend - Im not a serious fan of St Etienne though I respect them. But this was a serious result. The compilation has about 40 songs on it, only one of which I knew before, and is an embarrassment of riches.
The first CD is mainly soul and funk numbers, with the Isley Brothers the only band I know, but some really excellent songs. I particularly like the sixth track, Too Much Lovemaking, though there are several other very good songs. Misdemeanours, the only song I already knew, is also brilliant.
The second CD goes into more obscure territory. Alot of songs with ethereal-sounding ladies over quite wistful / bluesy beats. Its hard to describe, but you totally see where Goldfrapp got the inspiration for their first album from. The song by Beverly and John Martyn, for example, is a clear influence on Goldfrapp.
All in all, this is an excellent mix, and everyone who has heard it thinks so too. Buy it and enjoy.
An absolute gem
Perfectly blended as a mix album and great for adding the surprise factor to the iPod shuffle, this is crammed with wonderful, obscure tunes. If you understand where St Etienne draw their influences (old soul, orchestral pop, soundtracks, 60s London), you can buy this with confidence. Divided into the more upbeat first CD and the distinctly weird and wonderful second one, I never get bored with this collection. My favourite is the stunning Auntie Aviator by John and Beverley Martin. More please!
