Forward Motion or just motion?
After listening to Forward Motion over several days I wondered why it was not making the impact of "Surprise Surprise" or the collected legacy hits on "The Story So Far". Mr. Vernon's review reinforced my own that it is the usual sound of the band - but not quite. Where is the lilting sax that was such a standout sound on "Garden Party". This album is more ensemble playing than lead solos although the guitars and synths drive the bouncing tunes along.
Still a great band of course but in this case not the sound that makes your ears prick up.
I am a dedicated fan of tuneful charts and this album has them but somehow the sparkle that drew me to them more than 15 years ago seems to have faded - just a little.
Worth a listen
If you liked 'Surprise Surprise' and 'Observations' you'll love this. It provides catchy rhythms with uplifting harmonies topped by interesting leads with some of the old trademark sounds. Some interesting twists and turns. I've not given this a 5 as a couple of tracks don't quite hit the spot for me - but they're still enjoyable. Definitely worth adding to the collection.
