WWE SummerSlam 2004
Whilst this will go down as not one of those events that made the WWE what it is, many will remember this as the event in which Randy Orton became the youngest World Heavyweight Champion.
SummerSlam took place in the Air Canada Center on August 15th with a crowd of 17,460.
Now a look at the matches
Heat match: Rob Van Dam pinned Rene Dupree. Give this match ***
The Dudleyz and Spike defeated Rey Mysterio, Billy Kidman and Paul London. This match showed us the true nature of Spike Dudley as a heel and it came off in true heel style with Spike getting the pin. Not the best of matches...**
Kane defeated Matt Hardy in a 'Till Death Do Us Part' match. The winner would marry Lita and rumour had it Matt Hardy would be out for a few months with knee surgery. This one was pretty short and sure enough Kane won and Hardy hasn't been seen since the Wedding....**
John Cena pinned Booker T in the Best of Five Series Match...not much I can remember apart from it being short...**
Edge defeated Batista and Y2J to retain the IC Title...now this match was funny because Edge was booed and jeered in his home town! And he wasn't even playing heel...an indication of things to come...***
Kurt Angle defeated Eddie Guerrero...Kurt got some revenge on Eddie's win at WrestleMania XX with a win over Eddie. This was a good match....***
Triple H pinned Eugene....this was about revenge for Eugene but lost when the Game defeated him with a pedigree. This was a longer match but didn't showcase the Game in his true quality...**
Diva Dodgeball....let's not go there....team 'candidates' won
JBL defeated Undertaker to retain the WWE Title....the match wasn't all that disapointing but the ending was spoilt when a fan ran onto the hood of JBL's limo and all could see that it was 'papered' and 'gimmicked' for the Taker chokeslam after the ending...***
Randy Orton defeated Chris Benoit to win the World Heavyweight Title...what can I say, you have to see this match. Both men show a sign of respect after the match, but you have to see it. Even for a stiffy like Orton, he did well....*****
All in all, buy if your an Orton fan. If your not, I suggest you leave WWE SummerSlam to burn on it's own....
A rubbish pay-per-view saved by a brilliant main event
This years Summerslam was a bit of a dissapointing pay-per-view, but it did feature an excellent main event between Chris Benoit and Randy Orton as they clashed for the world heavyweight championship. But what was really significant about the pay-per-view was the sold out crowd on hand at the Air Canada centre in Toronto as they done the unthinkable, they went against WWE booking by booing the babyfaces (good guys) and cheering the heels (villans)! They even booed their home town boy Edge during the triple threat Intercontinental title match. At one point they were even chanting "We want christian!"
Here are my reviews:
6 Man Tag Team Match:
Rey Mysterio, Billy Kidman & Paul London
Vs
The Dudley Boys & Spike 3/5
A decent opener but all these guys have had better matches.
TILL DEATH DO US PART MATCH
Kane Vs Matt Hardy (W/Lita) 3/5
Why does Kane get all the rotten story lines? If you thought the Katey Vick story was a stinker wait till you here this. Kane forced Lita into a night of passion telling her that if she didn't then her boyfriend Matt Hardy would receive the beating of a life time, so Lita reluctently accepted. But as a result of this Lita became pregnant! An enraged Matt Hardy would then face Kane in a match in which the winner would marry Lita!
All round it was a good match which was sadly kept short.
United States Championship
BEST OF 5 SERIES MATCH 1
Booker T Vs John Cena 2/5
Booker and Cena had a long running feud over the US title and it would be settled over a best of 5 matches series. It was a poor match that was thankfully kept short.
Intercontinental Championship
TRIPLE THREAT MATCH
Edge Vs Batista Vs Chris Jericho 2/5
Another poor match but it was interesting to see hometown boy Edge get booed.
Kurt Angle Vs Eddie Guerrero 4/5
Great match between Latino Heat and The Olympic gold medalist, every bit as good as their match at Wrestlemania.
Triple H Vs Eugene 3/5
Eugene was embarresed by Triple H and then got revenge by costing him the world title, it would then be settled at Summerslam. A decent match but not memorable.
WWE Championship
John Bradshaw Layfield Vs The Undertaker 2/5
A rubbish match but it did feature an ending with a dangerous stunt.
World Heavyweight Championship
Chris Benoit Vs Randy Orton 5/5
Awesome match between two of my favourite wrestlers and gave an ending for the pay-per-view to be remembered by. It was also nice to see that Triple H wasn't in the main event of one of the supercard pay-per-views.
Not a highly recomenedend buy, it's only worth seeing for the main event and maybe also the Angle-Eddie match.
A good event spoiled by one thing
I thought that Summerslam 2004 was a pretty good event. The main event bewteen Chris Benoit and Randy Orton for the World Heavyweight Championship and the Wrestlemania rematch between Eddie Guerrero and Kurt Angle are both very good wrestling matches. The WWE Title match between JBL and The Undertaker is a decent brawl that has a disappointing ending. Seeing JBL Chokeslammed through his limo's roof is pretty cool. The match between Eugene and Triple H is a typical 'underdog versus big, nasty heel' match, but it's still entertaining and sees HHH using all sorts of heel tactics in an attempt to get the crowd to boo him.
Match #1 in the Best Of Five Series which sees US Champ Booker T square off against John Cena, and the Till Death Do Us Part Match between Matt Hardy and Kane are both average matches, but nothing too horrible.
The opening 6 Man Tag Team Match in which The Dudley Boyz take on Billy Kidman, Paul London and Rey Mysterio is a good match to open the PPV while he Triple Threat Match for the IC Title sees champion Edge booed BY HIS HOMETOWN FANS.
For me, the crowd spoiled parts of this event. For example, during the JBL/Undertaker match, the fans decide to do a Mexican Wave instead of paying attention to what's going on in the ring. They also 'shockingly' booed most of the good guys (Eddie, Eugene, Edge). I notcie that this seems to happen most times the WWE visits Canada. They boo the good guys, and the cheer the bad guys.
This isn't an essential WWE pay-per-view, but if you do buy it, you won't be disappointed. At least, not with the in-ring action anway.
