Synopsis
As the 1980s turned into the 1990s a new star was born when rapper/actor Will Smith donned the guise of THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR. Shipped out to California to live with wealthy relatives, he sets about teaching his adopted family some street-smarts, while his original reason for being there--to learn some old fashioned beliefs and values--rapidly falls by the wayside. His Aunt Vivian ((Janet Hubert-Whitten) and uncle Philip Banks (James Avery) can't control him, and the laughs continue to flow as The Fresh Prince attempts to get everyone else to fit in around him, including cousins Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro), Hilary (Karyn Parsons) and Ashley (Tatyana Ali). Now a legendary part of early-1990s television scheduling, this release includes the first season in its entirety.

A classic comedy that still feels Fresh!5
I've waited so long for this to come out on DVD and bought this on the day of release. I have loved the show for many years often watching repeats constantly aired on TV. I never could work out how I found the jokes so funny even though I could virtually recite every line. It's one of those rare programs that never loses its appeal.

It's a show that isn't afraid to poke fun at itself and rarely takes itself seriously. Having said that, there is usually a moral at the end of every story and this is drilled into the audience. That's the only time it even remotely takes itself seriously.

The actors appear to be having great fun playing their characters and every character has their place in the show adding to the comedy. Will and Carlton are my personal favourites but they only would be half as funny without the rest of the family to gel the whole thing together.

There are also a number of cameo roles littered throughout the first season ranging from Quincey Jones to Queen Latifah and even Evander Holyfield.

There is little in the way of extras here. The only extra you get is a brief 10 or 15 minute look back at the first series featuring comments from some of the actors (though Will Smith is absent among others). What you do get is 25 brilliant episodes of arguably the best comedy of the 90s all spread onto 5 discs.

So thats the first of the 6 seasons brought to DVD. I for one hope they bring out the rest of the seasons as I'll be sure to snap them up the first chance I get. Fresh Prince of Bel Air is a show that can easily be watched over and over again. I would recommend this to anyone with a sense of humour. And if you dont have a sense a humour? Well, this could be the perfect opportunity to develop one!

One word to sum up: Unmissable!!!

The best of the 90's5
The Fresh Prince of Bel Air burst into the TV screens in 1990 and established Will Smith as a household name in Hollywood and the music scene. The 90's marked a string of quality comedies. Fresh Prince of Bel Air certainly joins the list.

I fondly remember watching the series after school and it really brightened the evenings. Will Smith born and raised in Philaphedia is sent to the affluent district of Calfornia to join aritistocat family with strong values. He is acquainted with big Uncle Phil, Vivenne, geeky Carlton, big spender Hilary, adorable Ashley and sacrasric English butler Geoffrey. How does he fits in the family? That is the main focal point of the show. The 25 hugely entertaining episodes featured in the disc set offers endless laughter to really liven your day and cheer you up. You will be laughing like anything. That is the real beauty of comedy. My favourites are the episodes featuring Jazz, the DJ who gets thrown out for being a nuiscane. I love episodes feauring the close bonding between Carlton and Will.

Fresh Prince of Bel Air Season 1 provides a memorable journey of the 90's in terms of its fashion, music scene and crazes. The American black community is the main focus of the show and their antiques are viewed in a hilarious context, without any intent to be offensive and stereotypical. If you love quality comedy, Fresh Prince of Bel Air season 1 is your answer.
