Editorial Reviews

CD Description
Singer/guitarist Junior Kimbrough was a staple of the Fat Possum label's down-and-dirty blues roster. His Mississippi hill-country sound, simultaneously rural and electrified, hada driving, hypnotic quality that survived well beyond his death in 1998. As testament to his enduring legacy, a brace of rock artists joined forces to pay tribute to the late, great bluesman on SUNDAY NIGHTS: THE SONGS OF JUNIOR KIMBROUGH.
Iggy Pop & the Stooges open things up with the genuinelydisturbing "You Better Run", where Iggy puts tongue firmly in cheek to inhabit the character of a potential rapist, while the Stooges rage behind him. Former Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan provides one of the finest moments with hisversion of "All Night Long", which comes the closest to capturing Kimbrough's transfixing power. Spiritualised hearkensback to singer Jason Pierce's Spacemen 3 days with a psychedelic-blues take on "Sad Days Lonely Nights". As the alt-rock heavyweights line up to give their all for Kimbrough, it becomes clear that the template he created will continue to be reinterpreted and expanded upon.

Another gem from Fat Possum4
A great selection of JK's work lovingly covered by major artists. One in particular stands out. Sad Days Lonely Nights by Spiritualized is pretty sublime. Good stuff from the Black Keys and the Stooges. If your into real blues, you're gonna really like this.

Those influenced by Junior pay homage4
An album that I was rather suspicious of at first; being a fan of Junior leads one to think that no-one can really do him justice. Not even the impressive array of artists on display here. However I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised by this effort. Most tributes have at least a couple of duffers that besmirch rather than honour those they are paying tribute to. This album fortunately does not suffer from that. It is a good introduction for the uninitiated and fans will appreciate it too. Well worth buying.

brilliant and intriguing introduction4
this is a fine little album with one or two absolute stunners , the Stooges play a great tribute on 'You better run' ( which you get 2 versions of here ) and possibly perform better here than on their new album. stand out track is Spiritualized version of the title track incredible ! Cat Powers' 'Do the Stomp' kicks along at fine pace ,Whitey Kirst version of Pull Your clothes off drips in its heavy trance like riff and brilliant lead guitar not too far removed from Kossoff style. Mark Lanagan sticks more to the instructions but again if you are Lanagan do what you do best and voila All night Long is superb . Burn in hell by The Ponys is a great blues hypnotic drive with VU guitar style here and there . if you like blues or indeed have been a fan of kimbrough you'll like this but if you are a fan of neither i urge you to check it out as it may take you somewhere quite interesting and its simply a great album .
