Amazon.co.uk Review
Rod Stewart's various incarnations--Rod the Mod, Rod the Rocker, Rod the Crooner, and so on--are on display on Live at Royal Albert Hall. In what amounts to a 90-minute singalong with his adoring fans, the raw-voiced singer (now huskier than ever) reprises selections from throughout his long and fruitful career, from his early '70s solo albums, including the best of the lot, 1971's Every Picture Tells a Story, through his surprisingly skillful (and successful) new millennium emergence as an interpreter of the Great American Songbook. Despite his having released three CDs of standards by the time of this good-looking, great-sounding concert, only five of the 17 tunes come from them, including a version of "As Time Goes By" with Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders (lush orchestration notwithstanding, there's no disguising the fact that both singers are more at home singing rock or pop than jazz, big band, or cabaret material). Much more emphasis is put on early Stewart material like "You Wear It Well", "Reason to Believe", and "Maggie May" songs that were and are beautifully limned by acoustic guitars, violin, and mandolin. Good buddy, former bandmate (in the Faces and the Jeff Beck Group), and current Rolling Stone Ron Wood plays guitar on a couple of numbers (including a raucous "Stay with Me"), and while Stewart does insist on giving "Hot Legs" a spin, at the age of 59 he at least has the good sense to keep "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" under wraps. A brief tour documentary is the principal DVD bonus feature. --Sam Graham

Customer Reviews
A must!
This show was shot at Royal Albert Hall in the end of 2004 and edited to about 90 minutes of DVD time, leaving 17 songs out of 25 from the original show (plus biography and countdown to the show documentary. There are 12 classics (including "Stay with me" with Ronnie Wood) and 5 standards from "American songbook" trilogy ("As Times Goes by" performed with Chrissie Hynde of Pretenders). All in all, it's a wonderful DVD - great show and excellent quality of audio and video. At 59 Rod is still a great entertainer, and his backing musicians are very good. The audience is just fantastic and is ready to sing along with Rod all the time (sometimes he even has to tell that they can not start to sing before him).
One of the best live DVDs I've ever seen. Highly recommended to all music lovers!
FIRST CLASS ENTERTAINMENT
When I caught only the last twenty minutes of this concert on the B.B.C. and did not know of anybody who had taped, it I had to enquire if it was to be released on DVD. Fortunately it was and since I received it I have played it time and time again. This is classic Rod Stewart at his best, it is a jamboree of music.
Appearances by Ronnie Wood and Chrissy Hind bolster the glittering array of top class musicians on show. The invitation of Amy Belle who a week before the concert was busking in Glasgow put a warming feel to the gig.
This DVD is simply awesome Five stars are not enough.
Classy pop
Classic and classy performance by ROD THE MOD - the best haircut and best voice in the history of rock`n`roll.
His songs put you in the mood for romance, partying and having a good old drink.
Rod is a man for all seasons and his songs fit every occassion.
