A good edition to the sub Res Evil genre
The `Survival Horror' genre is a very busy one: you have the Resident Evils and Silent Hills at the top and then a lot of lesser imitators at the bottom. I'm happy to say that this game sits somewhere in the middle.
I like this game, it a good solid game. The story isn't really there and seems to be big gaps in what story there is, but you're not playing it for that - you're playing for zombies on a boat!!!!! Come on as far as concepts go it equals Snakes On A Plane.
The gameplay is fun and fairly simple and this game is more reliant on action then puzzle which for people like me who just fancy messing about on something every now and then is perfect. I loved walking around the boat and shooting the fast moving zombies, brilliant.
The second half of the game is also fun, but feels added on. Sadly with all boat games, there's not too much for you to do, a boat's only so big. So for the second half of the game, you move to an oil rig and the `story continues' or in my case, an excuse to go around and shoot more zombies.
I really think this is a game you should think about buying as it's always on sale and is a lot of fun to play. I guarantee that this will keep you occupied and happy for an afternoon until RE5 is released.
certainly worth a look...
i was almost put off buying this game when i saw a multitude of poor online reviews. in the end, the low price tag won me over (£8.96?! its only a recent game!). luckily cold fear did not disappoint!
the control system is pretty straightforward, although i did struggle with the manual aim at the first (us survival horror fans arent used to having to aim, its usually just a case of draw weapon and shoot... pressing 'up' or 'down' only in the most extreme circumstances!).
cold fear has a decent enough plot (think 'alien' meets '28 days later'... yes those zombies really do run!), but, like early resident evil games has rubbish dialogue! this isnt such a bad thing though, as a little light humour (although unintended) certainly helps to relieve the tension.
the action is much more fast paced than your average survival horror. the atmosphere is truly gripping and for the first time scary, rather than merely unnerving. the difficulty level is tough, even on normal, so you get a great deal of satisfaction from your progress. the save game points aren't as far apart as some reviewers have made them out to be!
give it a go - it might not be everyones cup of tea, but if you're a fan of the survival horror genre and in search of something a little tougher, this might be for you. i love it!
Difficult, but rewarding - worth the effort.
When I started the game I was instantly impressed by the quality of the graphics, it looks like a scene right out of a film. When you first encounter the Exocel (human zombie form) you will probably note how difficult it is to aim the gun at them and how difficult it is to achieve the required headshot. I rarely managed a headshot; instead I just shot them with two shots then crushed their heads (only when I had nearly completed the game did I realise I shouldn't be wasting ammunition blowing their brains out when they were lying there).
There is a long load time within the game and when starting the game, but when the graphics are as rich as they are here, you can't help but ignore/forgive the load time.
I found the story very compelling and the main character was relatable (not that I'm a coast guard, but just that he was flung in at the deep end - pun not intended!). The game certainly provides a new (required) twist on the zombie genre.
The zombies are of the 28 Days Later and Dawn of the Dead (remake) variety in that they are fast. They all carry meat cleavers (which remains unexplained in the game) and some even have guns (as do some of the human "enemies"). The weapons array with which to dispatch them is very impressive, though I did tend to stick with the handgun and AK rifle.
The violence is thick, fast and gory. Plus there is the nauseating feeling of being on a boat in stormy waters and raging winds. I would certainly agree with the game being rated as an 18.
Another plus point to this game is that there are unlockable bonuses, such as character art, etc.
Aside from the load time there are also a few more negative points to the game:
The game difficulty is far too difficult even in easy mode, although once you get used to the controls it does become simpler. Plus I suppose it is aimed at a mature audience so that might allow for the difficulty level.
The manual targeting is a nightmare (especially when you have a mass of zombies running towards you), but can be overcome by head smashing once the zombie has been floored. It allows you to be inventive with how you destroy the zombies as well. Also the camera angles are very bad. When the character Tom is walking down a corridor the camera focuses on his face and behind him, which can be corrected by going into "shoulder vision". This becomes frustrating though when searching a room.
The game is quite short, taking less than eight hours, but worth while.
I would recommend this game to people who enjoyed The Thing, Silent Hill, (the dreadful) Twin Calibre, Project Zero, etc.
It has its bad points, but the good out weigh the bad and it deserves to do well due to the strength of the graphics and the story.
Four stars out of five.
