One Of The Greatest Hard Rock Albums!5
Many music fans may well say who? when confronted with the name Budgie, and isn't that really such a shame! Why this great band aren't up there with the likes of Purple, Zep, Sabbath etc is probably one of the greatest mysteries in rock music. This debut album has it all; fantastic hooks and melodies, driving guitars and riffs. Just take a listen to Guts and The Author and you will hear exactly what I mean. I just love Burke Shelley's vocals (shrill a la Geddy Lee but not that shrill), whilst the guitar playing and drumming is up there with the best of them. This new edition with the bonus tracks makes this the one to go for, especially as one of the extra tracks is a reworked Crash Course In Brain Surgery; definitely one to play at maximum volume. I'm so looking forward to buying more Budgie albums and completing the collection. Go and do the same!!

Raw rock at its finest4
In the days before nu metal, heavy metal, grunge et al there was just rock. And whilst Black Sabbath could arguably claim to be the heaviest band around in the early 70s (Zep were too folky and Purple too fast), Budgie ran them a very close second. Songs like Guts and The Author feature relentless riffing and soloing from Tony Bourge (a sadly underrated guitarist), shrill (yet always melodic) vocals from Burke Shelley and sheer drum mayhem from Ray Rhillips. For some this was the definitive Budgie line up and whilst they were to go on release better albums up to Tony's departure, this album perfectly showcases 40 or so minutes of what seventies rock was like. You had to be there and I was and I loved 'em.

Budgie. Budgie the remaster.4
I have rated this album for a very long time. In fact I bought the LP when it came out in '71. I cannot elaborate any further than the previous reviewers on how good it is, but was it the office junior at 'Remasters R Us' who did 'Guts' the first track? On the original LP it starts with a lead guitar intro, then joined by the drums and bass, increasing in sound level as it does so. On this remaster its a very loud intro, then when the drums and bass come in its like it hits an automatic recording level max. This quietens the lead guitar making the combined sound on the same sound level of the intro, and muffled. There is also some hiss on the start of track 4 N.d.p.w. Its a shame because the rest of the tracks sound good. I'm surprised this wasn't sorted out before release. Having said that I class this as a classic rock album.
