Editorial Reviews
Album Description
• Doris Duke’s "I’m A Loser" is considered by many – including the late Dave Godin – to be the greatest deep soul album of all time. •To satisfy the demand from those who missed its previous (and very brief) Japanese CD reissue in the early 1990s, Kent is honoured to restore "I’m A Loser" to catalogue, as part of this retrospective of Doris’ two year collaboration with another R&B legend, Jerry Williams Jr aka Swamp Dogg. •As well as Doris’ two Swamp-produced albums, the CD also features the first reissue - in 36 years! – of both sides of Doris’ rare US Jay Boy single (originally released as Doris Willingham). •The sleeve notes include Swamp Dogg’s own reminiscences of the sessions that produced this monumentally soulful music.
Customer Reviews
At last, REAL Soul Sessions!
Worth the wait? Unquestionably.
Sometimes, with music, distance lends enchantment, and fondly-remembered recordings prove a disappointment after long periods without being heard. I well remember buying the original vinyl LP version of 'I'm a Loser' on its first release around 1970. After playing it almost to death, I lent it to a girlfriend whom I was desperately trying to convert to soul music. I succeeded rather to well, and never saw the LP (or the girl) again.
And now, after all this time those wonderful people at Kent have reissued it on CD, along with a treasury of additional Doris Duke material. Not only does it not disappoint, it seems to have improved with age. Perhaps this is due to the scarcity of any real soul these days, but more likely it is because music like this, and the messages it contains, are ageless.
When it was first released, soul guru, the late Dave Godin, cited it as his favourite album (his original review in 'Blues and Soul magazine is included in the sleeve notes) .He could not have a finer memorial
There will never be anything better
This has to be the ultimate in real soul music. There hasn't been a single track I have skipped. The words to every song are phenomenal. If you like any form of soul music - you need to buy this - it's above anything else I have ever heard from any soul cd - and just from one artist - Doris Duke. The best soul cd I have ever heard.
What a great CD!
I have only recently discovered Doris Duke...and this CD is great,
especially for me Tracks 1 and 11 but all the rest are unmissable.
I am glad I stumbled across this soul singer that has eluded me for years.
I have pre ordered 'Woman' a CD due out later this month by Doris on the strength of this CD.
Buy it, put it on in the car, perfect, what a great CD!
