70's revisited
If only all compilations were put together with such care and attention! This wonderful 3 CD collection comes housed in a compact box with each CD in a card sleeve and with a booklet which provides a biog of every act; the CD's, booklet and box all show the infamous swirl label. Whilst the better known Vertigo acts of the day are represented (Black Sabbath, Status Quo, Uriah Heep) the real joy of this collection is contained in the music of bands who didn't quite break through (Gentle Giant, Beggars Opera, Juicy Lucy, Patto etc) and those whom you may not have heard of at all (Cressida, Atlantis, May Blitz et all). All of the music shares the wonderful sparse production so redolent of the period. And just look at some of those song titles; Song for the Bearded Lady, Bring Out Your Dead, Pantagruel's Nativity! This collection contains a veritable cornucopia of early 70's rock, and can ultimately be summed up in just one word: magnificent!
From an old Vertigonian.....
Would you trust a review of a rock CD written by a person who isn't much keen on rock and its fusions? Then don't worry about Billhinds23. There are some excellent classics here, innovative then and still a breath of fresh air now. Of particular note are Juicy Lucy (Who Do You Love? - just dig that down and dirty Southern Comfort slide guitar feel), May Blitz (For Madmen Only - heavy or what?), Atlantis (Living At The End Of Time), Jade Warrior (Mwenga Sketch - electrifying Afro-rock and more), and Aphrodite's Child (The Four Horsemen). Then you've got the delights of Colosseum, Black Sabbath, Gracious, Affinity, Warhorse, Uriah Heep, Freedom, and Status Quo. On the more jazz rock fusion or simply obscure side of rock there's Nucleus, Ben, Dr.Z, Patto, Ramases, Gentle Giant, Gravy Train, Ronno and Clear Blue Sky. It's a treasure trove with mostly gold and silver but you're always going to get a bit of brass that is not one's cup of tea. C'est la vie. This CD set is worth getting. Vertigo were a progressive label, and this is 'progressive rock' from before progressive meant a bank of keyboards. Worth yer dosh.
Thank You!
Thank you? Well basically for finally appreciating just how important this vertigo record label was to the great british heavy progressive contempary rock scene! This is truly an award winning compilation, I do know this and that about 70`s rock , but it is also very nice to hear music by bands ones heard of but never actually musically heard! for instance Warhorse, Nucleus, Affinity, Ben, a smile came to my face when these were on and I knew that I have now been introduced to bands I want to go out and follow up . Try this 3CD set and see if you get hooked by something. I hope you do!
