UNKLESounds: Edit Music for a Film--Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Reconstruction was created for the "After Dark" event in the ICA, London. James Lavelle put together a mix of soundtracks from films that inspired him the most and this is the result: a seamless mix of some of the biggest tracks from the dancefloor interspersed with movie dialogue and well known film music. UNKLESounds: Edit Music for a Film... includes tracks and collaborations from Roots Manuva and Richard Ashcroft alongside original UNKLE compositions.

'Edit Music For A Film' is dance act UNKLE's third full-length album. Mixing together well known snippets of film dialogue with their trademark beats and film scores, the album has all the hallmarks of UNKLE's trademark dense, layered sound. UNKLE franchise in full flow again
Mr Lavelle has cottoned onto the fact that if he tags the UNKLE name to a DJ mix, he's onto a winner. I know this, I got the Do Androids Dream set for £60 months before it got magically released onto the public for £25 (guh).

Lavelle has found a certain style that he likes, no doubt through his stints as a Fabric resident, and you'll see a the same themes crop up throughout his mixes from the UNKLE stuff to the Global Underground mixes. Sometimes you run the risk of stumbling over the same tracks and mixes over and over again (Big Brother Is Watching You being an example of this, coming across as a edited down version of Do Androids Dream. There was no need!). Luckily, when you head onto the 1st disc of Edit Music, you realise that its is a piece of class. Opening with the 20th Century Fox fanfare and a cheeky snippet of Lucas' THX 'noise', the mix flows through some choice breaks, varying from downtempo right up to drum and bass. The usual UNKLE accapellas make their appearences to give a new edge to well known tracks and Lavelle indulges himself with a nice scattering of well known film samples.

The 2nd disc just didn't manage to have the sparkle of the 1st disc, my interest only being perked at a rather cheeky progressive reworking of the 'Bang Bang Shoot You Down' opening credits of Kill Bill. Not a bad mix all in all, but just not as interesting as the opening A New Hope.

I think now is the time for Mr Lavelle to hit us with a new UNKLE album or to branch out into territories uncharted, theres a bit of competition in the moody breaks field now with Meat Katie and Adam Freeland both sticking out stonking Fabric mixes, plus Evil Nine's own artist album.

UNKLE fanatics will love to snap this up although its not as initially impressive as the Do Androids Dream set when that came out. If you've not got Do Androids Dream, thats the place to head immediately for the class 3CD tour de force that Lavelle spells out over downtempo, breaks and house.

Unkle and the silverscreen
Edit music for a film is a mindblowing.
simply put, in one simple word.
Here the Unkle lads James Lavelle and Richard File (credited as the directors in the sleeve notes) take elements from all things class and sophistication, and of course damn fine music and film. With an obvious love of sci-fi all manner of outer worldy silverscreen moments come into the mix, Alien to THX 1138 and everything in between, It isn't just spaceships and planets though as the mix delves into uma Thurmans dark rambling from kill Bill and drugs and swearing from Scarface. The music is different and varied including a lot of original unkle accapellas and track reworkings from their two albums, especially the menacing evil of the 'lonely soul' rework and the highly emotional dub of 'In a state' and some of the best underground dancefloor tracks from Dylan Rhymes, Massive Attack, Mos Def, Meat Katie just to name but a few. Also awesome is the inclusion of some very tidy remixes and edits to 'Bang bang my baby shot me down' which the unkle boys turn into a total dance floor stormer and Roots maneuver belting out some rhymes over the infamous 'Battle without humanity or honour' from kill Bill vol. 1 and a very cool electro edit to the twisted score of 'A clockwork orange' which I reckon, if Stanley Kubrick had heard when making the movie, he would of used it in his masterpiece!
I have named but a mere few of the little gems and surprises you will find in this amazing mix, there is something here for everyone.

Quite simply, Unkle have created a masterpiece that is easily worthy of an academy award!

TWO of the best mixes ever!
Wow - I had been eagerly awaiting this release for months and when it finally was released it actually exceeded my expectations. Unlike most, I am not a great fan of UNKLE's second album (the first seems more imaginative and varied to my ears). However, several of the tunes from the second album appear here (in various forms) over the two CDs and I must say they sound a lot better in the context of the mixes. The re-edits/reconstructions used here bring a freshness and directness that suits the DJ mix format.
But there is more to these mixes than the UNKLE tunes. There are a lot of great tracks that I have not heard before from other artists and these more than stand up to the UNKLE material - James Lavelle's track selection cannot be faulted. The tunes are all very interesting and you won't here many of them elsewhere. A highlight for me is the remix of Nancy Sinatra's 'Shot Me Down' on the bonus mix - infinitely better than the Audio Bullys remix.
This is more than just a series of great tracks though - the mixing is seamless and exciting. Lavelle builds a soundscape that you can get lost in and just chill out to, but it is equally good if you turn it up loud and revel in the beats.
What really sets this mix apart is the innovative and exciting use of movie samples (dialogue, sound effects and theme music). The dialogue from 'The Insider' on the second CD is particularly effective, set over an UNKLE track, which really raises the hairs on the back of the neck!
This is a superb set that I would recommend to any UNKLE fan (and also non-fans) any anyone who appreciates innovative mixing (particularly breaks, hip-hop, and chillout fans). It is definitely woth getting the Limited Edition version with a second full length mix CD (I actually prefer it to CD1!).
