Does not live up to other live performances by this group
Although I really enjoyed listening to this double CD of Joe Zawinul and the Zawinul Syndicate live in Vienna, I found it less exciting than the "World Tour" double CD. It is along the same lines – a superb fusion of jazz/rock with world music influences and forward-looking use of electronic instruments and effects. Zawinul usually has complete mastery of the electronic keyboards and effects and manages to make them sound an integral and natural part of the music, where in other hands they might come over as pointless and trite. However, the effects on this album, in particular the use of the vocoder, were in my opinion a little overdone and at times sat uneasily on the borderline between musicality and gratuitous electronic effects. However, having said that this does not live up other live performances, it is still an excellent performance and well worth listening to. Just not quite the sublime five star performance that Zawinul enthusiasts have become accustomed to.
