Manufacturer's Description
Featuring IQ Recording, the RDR-HX510 expands the range of DVD/HDD Recorders from Sony and is the ideal entry-level product for those wanting to improve their home entertainment experience. The I refers to the range's intelligent, easy to use controls and the Q stands for high quality DVD/HDD Recording.

The RDR-HX510 boasts 80GB HDD capability. For quality, the HQ+ recording realises the original video source signals as accurately as possible by recording onto the hard disk at 15Mbps; a higher bit rate than the DVD-Video standard bit rate.

In addition the RDR-HX510 has a newly developed D-Matrix Noise Reduction feature that diminishes 'digital noise' using three different noise reduction technologies simultaneously, depending on the characteristic of the picture.

For intelligence, the RDR-HX510 also includes original scene-detecting algorithm technology from Sony. This technology enables the DVD recorder to recognise significant scene changes and insert chapter marks using 'Intelligent Scene Chaptering'. The user can then select their desired scene easily by using the 'Visual Chapter Search' function, which displays a small thumbnail image of the beginning of each chapter. To delete a scene, the user simply employs the 'Scene Chapter Edit' function to select and then delete the scene. This process is also helped by a smoother and faster Graphic User Interface (GUI) than on previous models.

In addition the DVD recorder includes the new feature 'Pause Live TV' which allows the user to pause a live programme via the remote control. This feature means users can view their programmes with a delay or simply fast forward to catch up with the real time broadcast, thus giving consumers control over how they wish to view their programmes.

All Sony DVD Recorders continue to support the Dual RW format for the best compatibility with DVD media. They are also compatible with the new DVD+R Double-Layer format offering double the capacity of regular DVD+R dics to enable you to put over 10 hours of recording onto one DVD.

This Sony DVD recorder features a High Definition Multimedia Interface which provides a pure audio and video signal from DVD to TV. For the home entertainment buff this is digital heaven, with crisp clear images that are second to none.

Other features of the RDR-HX510 include DVD RAM playback, Intelligent Chaptering, D-Matrix Noise Reduction, one touch timer recording, chasing playback and subtitle recording.

    Impressive bit of kit...5
After 12+ years with our old Sony VCR (still working well but relegated to playroom duties...) we decided it was time to upgrade to DVD. Extensive surfing of reviews revealed that this was a well thought of machine, and having used it for some 2 months now we can see why.

Delivery was swift, and initial set up to our 12 year old Sony Trinitron TV was straightforward, although there were some issues with getting the DVD to talk to our Sky box. Careful reading of the instruction manual revealed where we were going wrong, and now everything is fine -as for other users, we have found that for someone brought up with VCR's it is essential to read and re-read the instructions to get the best from this impressive piece of kit.

When you take the time to do this the results are very good indeed. We haven't yet found a disc format that the machine can't sort out, the 80GB hard drive is big enough if you either watch the programmes you have recorded within a reasonable time, or dub those you want to keep for later (a straightforward process using the excellent on screen menus) The ability to watch a film whilst simultaneously recording another programme is also extremely useful.

If you are looking for a good quality machine, that promises a long life, with a sensible range of features, that will quickly become a trusted member of the family and all this at a good price, we recommend you take a good hard look at this.

    Well done Sony!

    Well work a look5
I purchased this dvd recorder a few days ago , having previously owned two panasonic dvd recorders. The picture quality both for recording and playback is CLEARLY superior on the sony machine. I have a large plasma screen and previously thought those digital aftefacts were normal. Not so with the sony, the picture is simply breathtaking. The recordings on SP mode are also clearly better than the SP mode on the panasonic. The player is easy to use and setup. Don't take my word for it, go to a local retailer and judge the picture quality for yourself. Highly recommended.

    Excellent Piece of Equipment5
Very User friendly. Menus are clear and concise, picture quality is very good (setting dependant) even the more advanced features (for mere mortals like myself) are simple and staight forward. High speed dubbing HDD-DVD-HDD is easy, and very useful for watching recorded programs on other compatible equipment. Different colour display buttons makes it simple to decipher between HDD or DVD modes.
80Gb Hard drive seems sufficient (for my use) Generally, Highly recommended.
