Customer Reviews
This is excellent , don't be taken in by other churlish reviewers
This is an excellent collection of modern jazz interpretations by one of the best exponents of the art, a real 'precision' player. Someone has described Ritenour's playing as 'monotone' (odd, to say the least). I'm a semi-pro guitar player and there's a stack of things that can be learnt from Ritenour. What he does have is a highly distinctive style modelled on that of Wes Montgomery, but with a few modern twists along the way. He shows real mastery of melody and harmony and the dynamics are tight and precise, of which the audience, needless to say, is appreciative. Each to their own and you may prefer others, but I just don't see how anyone could be uncomplimentary about this man's playing. If you enjoy jazz guitar, don't beleive the churlish nonsense that can be read elsewhere, give this is a try. DVD is excellent as well, lots of musician interviews.
Ritenour at his best
Wow!!! This is an amazing CD from one of the worlds finest guitar players. This one is a must have for all fans of good and tasteful guitar playing. The version of Captain Fingers is simply a killer tune. Make sure to buy this one today!!!

Lee Ritenour - Overtime (Concord/2005)
This is a live recording, which means it has clapping and whooping on it. It also comes complete with (uncredited) CD cover notes to explain the history of the project: Basically, Ritenour invited a load of old friends over for a jam, and Overtime is the result (it being also available as a double-DVD). Something in its favour is the presence of Dave Grusin, Harvey Mason, Eric Marienthal, Ernie Watts et al. So, you're thinking, it should be good - even great. But I wasn't too impressed overall. Despite his success, Ritenour's style of playing I find mostly rather monotone - at least it is here. Marienthal and Watts contribute impressively (see especially the former's solo on the opening Wes Montgomery tune Boss City, the latter's lyricism on Miles Davis' Blue in Green), while the funk gospel tune Papa Was a Rolling Stone is probably the album's highlight. Apart from that, there are moments that sparkle, but too few.
