CD Description
Despite a remarkably soulful voice somewhere between Teddy Pendergrass and Bill Withers, and a knack for penning breathtakingly original songs about love and life's misdirections,North Carolinian Anthony Hamilton spent almost a decade toiling in music's backlots. His critically hailed MCA debut, XTC, foretold the neo-soul movement, but came years before the genre's explosion in 1996. Seven years later, Hamilton finished his dues-paying and sold millions of records for Arista with the excellent COMIN' FROM WHERE I'M FROM.
In between, Hamilton landed at the independent Soulife Records. As evidenced by the recordings collected and remixed in 2005 on SOULIFE, the relationship agreed with the young singer-songwriter as he honed his singular style. Tortured love odes "Ol' Keeper" and "Love is So Complicated" show off Hamilton's malleable, soul-drenched voice, which has become famous for playing off others as he does here with Macy Gray on the sultry "Love and War" and with then-labelmate Sunshine Anderson on the old-school "Last Night". His storytelling skills are on full display on "Georgie Parker", which glides right intothe exquisite island ballad "Day Dreamin'". SOULIFE captures an artist on the precipice of long-awaited success, bringing to deserved light some beautiful compositions.

Anthony Hamilton's 2nd album is a compilation of alot of his previously unreleased material that was recorded even before he got his break with the grammy nominated album "Comin' From Where I'm From". He fuses 70's soul with new-age comtemporary R&B and also own's one of the most distinct voice's of modern R&B today.

1.I Used To Love Someone - A very strong opener has a very heavy spanish influence it is quite a sad song reminiscing of a past love. Such a haunting song "I used to love someone/Now im on the run" a very reflective song the spanish influence makes this song a real winner 10/10

2.I Cry - One of the most touching songs i think he's recorded so far the start of it sounds alot like Al Green's "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" and their are definate old school vibes in this song although my only gripe with the song is that it's alot like his hit "Charlene" but it's a very good song 10/10

3.Clearly - One of the best tracks on the album i really can't get enough of this song i love the harp's at the start its a very melodic song with its simply yet somewhat eerie piano loop the lyrics are not too bad either 10/10

4.Georgie Parker - I don't really care for this song much i feel it just drags out not one to listen to 4/10

5.Day Dreamin' - Very pleasent indeed one of the more enjoyable songs on the album a bit of a slow burner and does go on for longer than it should but i bump this tune alot 10/10

6.Ball & Chain - Ok no one believe's me i did hear this song along time ago and i remember it well even though i dont really like the song i didn't even like it back then call his wife a ball & chain is just damn right stupid 5/10

7.Ol' Keeper - The start is good i like the progressive sorta vibe to it the spoken part is cool (Anthony has a cool southern accent). I think the influence from his track "Mama Knew Love" is from this one the vibe is slightly the same but of course different at the same time a cool song 10/10

8.Love & War (Featuring Macy Gray) - This was featured on the John Singleton movie soundtrack to his masterpiece "Baby Boy" even though the song is an old one it's always good to hear Macy again (she needs to come back!). The both compliment each other vocally i think it's the same sorta raspyness a definitive "Break-up To Make-up" song 10/10

9.Last Night (Featuring Pino Pichino & Sunshine Anderson) - This song is featured on Sunshine's 2001 debut "Your Woman" this was the song that introduced me to Anthony i thought his voice was amazing him and Sunshine make a good duet not quite Marvin & Tammi but it works very well 10/10

10.Love Is So Complicated - The 1st single which i didn't like that much seemed to mainstream to me but i did grow on me alot and the statement is very true "Love Is So Complicated" 8/10

11.Icing On The Cake - Not alot of people know him but this song is one that a singer called Martin Luther would sing (check out his debut "Rebel Soul Music".This has the same sorta haunting tone as track 1 i think the chorus doesn't fit that well and it does (even though some people might disagree) sounds like a Sade track 10/10

12.Exclusively - This song really goes on for far too long clocking nearly 7 minutes i turned it off after 5 mins it just dragged out the beat is quite good tho but i think he should have just ended the album with track 11 5/10

Top 5
1.Clearly
2.I Used To Love Someone
3.Icing On The Cake
4.Last Night
5.Love & War/I Cry

If you picked up the 1st album and liked it then i do suggest getting this too. A couple of low points but overall the album is a very good one and a good step forward even if the material is quite old

saw anthony hamilton on some music show. didnt have a scooby who he was, but took a chance and bought this album. as is usually the case the 1st listen was ok but nothing special or so i thought. anyway, it just grew and grew on me and now i am very happy i spent the money. he has a collosal voice. put it on when you want to break your duck with your new girlfriend. it will definitely shorten the odds
