Well worth a watch
I bought this DVD purely on the topic and the number of great reviews it had received, having never heard or seen it before.
I wasn't overly impressed with the initial pilot - I wasn't particularly keen on 'George' the main charater, but I persevered and all the characters have since grown on me, it is a great programme and very thought provoking. It's compulsive viewing, and very well written, I am about half way through the series and can't wait to watch the rest. It's a 'must have' for anyone's DVD collection, I will be buying series 2 very shortly.
A cross between "Reaper" & "Six Feet Under"
Whilst browsing here on Amazon this was "recommended" to me in "MY STORE" clearly based on the previous searches I had done. I had searched both for REAPER and SIX FEET UNDER and when this popped up I had never even hear of it, but Amazon's automatic recommendations were bang on the money this time as this show is best described as a cross between these 2 shows.
After reading the synopsis and just viewing the box art work ( a picture of Death blowing a huge pink gum bubble) I know this was the sort of quirky, off the wall thing I like so I took a complete chance and bought it "blind" so to speak.
I have never been more pleased with a purchase! Rather than go into lengthy detail about the plot & characters, all you need to know that after watching just the first 2 episodes I was enjoying it so much that I immediately came back and have now ordered the second series.
Trust me....take a chance......
Worth staying with
I came across this following a chain of recommendations from the very different (and highly recommended) "Wonderfalls". It took me a while to get into; the basic premise doesn't quite make sense, and the writers are not afraid to give main characters (including the heroine) some pretty unappealing traits. But it really grew on me in the end; I think the second series is even better, come to that. The joy of it is in the characters; they are so well written and acted that the holes in the basic concept end up mattering not at all. It sneaks under your guard; it's very funny, but much less sentimental than most, even very good, American series; George's parents' marriage, for example, really is in very bad trouble, her little sister really is very badly screwed up, and there's no pretence everything is all for the best somehow. The Amazon blurb that each of the Reapers "has a lesson to learn before they can move on" gives a completely wrong idea: it's not that sort of show at all. It's much better.
I particularly like the development of Dolores Herbig, George's very odd boss in her day job. There is very much more to her than we (or George) first realize.
