Overlooked little gems5
Dee Dee Warwick is Dionne Warwick's younger sister. This of course makes her related to Cissy and Whitney Houston. Dee Dee is a too often overlooked member of that soul dynasty.

She doesn't have Dionne's rich cream caramel crossover vocal ability, but Dee Dee's voice is a more pure, soulful instrument.

These recordings come from her stay at Mercury records in the mid/late 60s. They include 'I'm Gonna Make You Love Me', which predates The Supremes/Temptations hit version by a couple of years. I'm not sure if this is the original, as the song was also recorded by Madeline Bell (who later settled in the UK and joined Blue Mink). Also here is a version of 'Alfie', which allows you to compare Dee Dee and Dionne. It would be unfair to say which Warwick version I prefer, but both sisters run rings around Cilla and also Cher. Remembering Val Doonican, I cringed when I saw 'Ring Of Bright Water' on the album, but not when I heard it. I believe the lady could have been a much bigger star than she is.

In the 70s, Dee Dee went on to Atlantic subsidiary Atco. Her Atco stuff is available at silly collectable prices, but if you want a sample, there is a compilation called 'So Soulful 70's' which contains her version of Elvis Presley's hit 'Suspicious Minds' as well as other minor gems from a wonderful array of artists.

This disc comes with four pages of notes by Britain's own 'Amdassador of Soul' David Nathan. He concentrates on the success that Dee Dee had, rather than on the success she didn't have.

If you like those 60s soul sounds, then this album is fine example of the genre, from an artist who deserves more recognition than she gets.
