Manic Mania
I bought this when I was looking for the original Pictionary and couldn't find it in the shops. I was a little unsure about it as I didn't really know how it was going to play.
It turned out to be huge success. The variety of ways of 'drawing' really do earn it the title of 'Mania'. I have six children aged between 10 and 16, and this game is regularly pulled out of the cupboard to while away the hours, not to mention it's popularity at sleepovers, and when family come to stay. 'People Putty' in particular seems to produce hilarious results.
This is not a quiet game so if you have a group of teenagers playing it you might want to invest in some ear plugs.
It seems to appeal to girls more than boys, although that could be a bias that it is more predominant in this house where the boys are football and war-game players.
To get the best out of this game you really need to have at least three people on each team. My only real complaint, though, is that the drawing boards are not good. We got around that by buying some cheap notebooks and pencils.
All-in-all I stringly reccommend this game.
Not a patch on the original
I love the original Pictionary - it's been a long-standing favourite for gatherings of family and friends for many years. I bought this version for my in-laws only because I couldn't find 'classic' Pictionary in the store, and the new format looked tempting, particularly the magnetic pads (no more hunting around for bits of paper!).
This version is an absolute disaster though. The additions to the rules are pointless and often unusable, and what was a simple and enjoyable game has been overcomplicated to the point of idiocy. The 'challenge chips' for example are an utter waste of time, since many of the clues are so obscure it's hard enough getting one in a minute, let alone two or three. On top of that, many of the clues in the version I bought clearly hadn't been changed from the American version, so people had no chance of guessing them however much time they had ('Thumb Tack' for example). Several of the clues for the new 'pose your partner' round looked like they were in the wrong category by mistake, as while some were possible (pose your partner as a bodybuilder, or clown), others were so abstract they left both teams scratching their heads for the whole minute without doing anything.
The magnetic drawing boards are a nice idea, but are completely useless in practice - it draws really thick lines so you can't draw anything much more complicated than a table without creating an incomprehensible mess.
Overall it has the feel of a sloppy, rushed product that just hasn't been thought through or properly tested, and is simply no fun to play. We are all avid Pictionary players and were all frustrated and annoyed with this version very quickly.
Great New Game!
This is a very creative and entertaining new game. Great for a fun group of people. You will laugh the whole time. The first time we played, everyone loved it, and it gets better every time. It is the new favorite.
