Just a minit!5
This is a great collection of tracks for afficinados of 60's soul. The songs should stand up shoulder to shoulder with TM and Stax but there is just some essence missing to make them chart-toppers that the other two labels were able to infuse into their arrangements. My biggest disappointment is the lack of Homer Banks and Jimmy McCracklin. However very good value for money and I would recommend it

The cream of New Orleans soul in the 1960's5
This is a strange one- at an R.R.P. of £19.99 this may appear to be a budget album, especially since it will not have the wider appeal of a Motown or Stax compliation. Certainly the packaging might not instantly fill you with hope- a cardboard box (in the same fashion as this companies' own Curtom box set) and with three cardboard sleeves inside. But this should not bother the true music fans. The effort that has gone into the important aspects of a box collection is commendable; first off there is a 40 page glossy booklet included with extensive notes about the history of these labels, the artists and the music. On the back of each cd sleeve is the date of release for each song, and although this isn't too helpful on the 4 previously unreleased before on cd tracks (which have 2005 as the release date) there is enough information in the booklet to find out the general recording dates. The songs aren't arranged by release date, which is another minor drawback, although generally the first cd contains early 60's songs, the second has the mid to later 60's songs and the third cd appears to be a collection of rarer tracks.

The music itself- well New Orleans is on the 1960's musical map primarily for its R&B scene. There are many important releases that were guided by the legendary Allen Toussaint including such classics as Lipstick traces, land of a 1000 dances, it will stand and mother in law. In particular the second disc is as joy to listen to: its much closer to the Stax sound than Motown but much more rootsie. I've heard a few of these songs on other compilations, but to have 89 of these tracks on one compilation is a real find. I would definately reccomend this to any fellow mod fan or anyone else who likes 60's soul.

They're not all after your money5
The UK has a number of great reissue labels like Cherry Red,Ace and Charly and all the CDs are beautifully packaged with informative fact packed booklets.Soometimes you get 4 CDs which work out at very little money. Here you get a 3 CD set with a booklet which would take a couple of hours to read and digest.
The music itself is the kind of New Orleans rhythm'n'blues which influenced many English groups especially the Stones and its all from just 2 labels which began in 1960-Instant and Minit
They had many hit singles through the 60s such as Mother In Law by Ernie K-Doe,Chris Kenner with I Like It Like That and Land of 1000 Dances and recorded the first singles by future superstar black singers like Lee Dorsey,Aaron Neville and Irma Thomas.
The recent History Channel documentary on Allen Toussaint focused strongly on the label-Toussaint was really the major player and success story-writer,producer and occasonally artist-though his own career as a future recording artist was stalled by him in order to conncentrate on the main business but along the way the group he fronted known as the Stokes recorded an instrumental called Whipped Cream which Herb Alpert later picked up.
In the 70s Toussaint had a recording studio called Sea Saint where Paul McCartney & Wings recorded Venus & Mars.
Also in the 80s many of their copyrights were covered in England-both the Darts and Shakin' Stevens had big hits with Its raining-a song recorded first by Irma Thomas in the 50s
This jack of all trades picked up his recording career in the 80s with a series of albums the latest of which is a joint one with Elvis Costello.

The Minit and Instant labels were the longest running in New Orleans and licensed their product out to major labels many times in order to get it more widely distributed and away from its regional origins if the records weren't moving. Thus the story of the labels is the continuous chasing after further success which in many cases just about paid for the session
