Customer Reviews
Read this before you buy!
I recently bought Rock Profile which I think is brilliant and had enjoyed watching way back when it was on UK Play. However, I have to say I am so disappointed as there is no music clips in any of the interviews! For me, that definitely made it, the hilarious contrast between their take off and the real thing, sometimes not that different! Of course the interviews are still there but its just not the same without the music....
Where's Ronan?!?
Far funnier than the repetitive Little Britain, however this DVD collection is annoyingly incomplete. The artist videos from the original series have not been included and so the short sketches that played over them are also absent. This means that the hilarious Ronan Keating part is missing. I feel slightly duped.
Extremely hit and miss often lazy sketch comedy
I don't understand how on occasion Lucas and Walliams can hit such highs but most of the time they are content to write extremely lazy material;Little Britain is a further example of this ratio of effort/resting on laurels. At times, its like they sit down to write catchphrases and expect this to carry the comedy for a full 15 minutes, sometimes more. Some of these sketches are just awful in this respect, while others are genuinely funny pieces of absurd comedy writing. I would go as far to say that the Rock Facts, presented here in text only form as the music videos aren't included, are funnier than the main program, as they're just plain silly. At times its like they're catering to different audiences. The dip in quality may be explained by the sheer number of episodes that were made;perhaps they just couldn't come up with as many quality gags as they needed. I've often wondered at the dynamic of the pair, as although they have a sensible subtle style when it comes to interviews, as performers only Matt Lucas has any real range, as David Walliams seems to be happy playing the same three characters over and over. The real star of Rock Profile is Jamie Theakston, who carries his material with such effortless ease and really keeps the show watchable during some of the more dire sketches, and stands on his own as a great comedy performer on the odd occasion. He's not afraid to poke fun at himself either.
As far as the package go, BBC have made great effort to include every facet of Rock Profile appearances on these 2 discs. The feature-length special "Rock The Blind" is a mixed bag, as it just shamelessly retreads the characters' most memorable lines as they all sing the same excerpt of a song for charity, though a few laughs are raised from Lucas' Gary Barlow and his unknown musician who pops in to record a take to the bewilderment of Pete Waterman (a brilliant Ted Robbins). The other features include appearances by the characters on other shows (including the short lived atrocity Born Sloppy and the short lived gem The Priory) and in adverts etc., as well as all the Rock Facts previously mentioned.
In overview, the first disc is the weaker of the two, and even has a much more amateur feel to it. Series two on the other hand just...works better, and has a few more ideas to play with, as well as more one-joke duds. Really, the only shows worth watching twice are Steps, Prince, The Beatles, the two with Gary Barlow, Tom Jones & Shirley Bassey (bloody hilarious) Duran Duran, Abba, Geri Halliwell & George Michael (if only to watch Theakston's increasing frustration), U2, Blur and The Bee Gees, most of which are on the second disc. Like I said, there's a lot of good to be separated from the guff, but if you're not a fan of Little Britain's broad stereotypical lazy gags, then avoid this.
