Customer Reviews

Sweet Honesty5
Just think it has only taken me 40 years since the first release of this album to finally discover it and hear for myself how good this and the Solid Air album is.I have to say that it has been well worth the wait.If this year is the anniversary of 50 years of Island Records, what other gems have I missed out on ? Perhaps I made a slight mistake in listening to Road to Ruin first.Although quite decent in it's own right, it's not until you give Stormbringer a right good bashing, that the song writing and and whole feel of this duo shines through.

Gently powerful.5
I'm going to have to suppress my enthusiasm for 'Stormbringer', as it means too much to me, on a personal level. That aside, it is a seminal 'must have' album. Ardent 'John Martyn' fans sometimes have a problem with 'wife' Beverley.....whereas, I have problem with her absence, after 'Road to Ruin'. Some say that she cannot sing. For me, she inhabits that rarified atmosphere of other famous non-singers, who nevertheless are capable of transporting the listener beyond the mere musically 'accomplished'..... Jane Birkin, Marrianne Faithfull et al. In short, I just don't care. Beverley Martyn 'does it for me' every time. Hers is the true voice of emotion. Anyhows, she CAN sing and, her 'musical antecedents', as 'Beverley Kutner', are as rich as it is possible to get; so 'ya-boo-sucks' to any other opinion!
It is not by accident that this album has been continuously produced for very nearly forty years! In its own quiet way, it is one of the greatest albums of all time.

The best record ever5
A wonderful record, great song well sung before John became unintelligible. The Ocean is the stand out track it is a shame that Island don't release the John and Beverley tracks they retain. They were a great partnership and John solo efforts never lived up to the excellence of this record. Two talents wasted, the whole was better than the parts. This is the one record to buy before you die.
