Customer Reviews
Don't listen to those who underrate this game!
You have probably read many poor reviews of this game so far. This is mainly due to the fact that people aren't willing to try something new. Therefore as soon as they pick this game up they hate it, as it isn't the standard action adventure game they were expecting. But that is the reason why this game is so fantastic!! It is brimming with originality and every element of it will surprise you.
As you start the game don't be taken aback by the cell shaded graphics or the eerie voices of other characters, as this makes the game so stylish.
You adopt one of seven personalities of Harman Smith, all with different weapons and skills which you can work on throughout the game. Although you are killing zombies, this is not a dreary Resident Evil style game. There are many different types of enemies throughout the game, and the boss fights are fantastic! with some being stronger against certain characters than others.
This game has many puzzles to it as well and really adds to the gameplay. Although the game may first seem very simple, it has so much depth to it as you can enhance your characters abilities by collecting thick blood.
There are a few downers though to this game. Firstly it isn't free roaming and you have to select an icon to go through every door which can get annoying. Also the controls are a little fiddly, but this game wasn't originally designed for the PS2 so that would be expected. If you have a Gamecube, get it on that instead!
All in all though, this is one hell of an action adventure game and if you don't play this you have really missed out on something special.
Stylish, bloody and twisted. So many won't understand...
Wow, whlist this may not be the best game this year it has so much going for it that so many gamers simply won't 'get'.
Based around the 7 split personailities of wheelchair-bound Harman Smith, each one an assasin with unique skills, the player is taken on an incredible ride.
The story deals with, but isn't bogged down by many different and sometimes disturbing threads; the killer 7 aren't the most amiable of groups of people you could care to meet and the other degenerates who populate the beautifully created world aren't the most normal either. Ghosts, psychos, sickos and gimps all join the cast.
The gaemplay is actually very simple, press a button to move along a pre-set path and choose whoch way to go at junctions. There are very simple 'which character/which object do I need here' puzzles and basic first person shooting sections, but the real joy here comes from the beatiful environments, almost David Lynch-like storyline which confuses and entrances in equal measures, and the soundtrack which ranges from brilliant ambiant pieces to jazz.
Grand Theft Auto this is not, and so the vast majority of people won't touch it, but if you're up for something a little bit different with strong characters and a proper messed up story then give this a go. It IS a game, but it's more of an experience.
One of the best games of 2005!
Ignore the meagre reviews this has attracted, you have never played anything this innovative or stylish in your life.
As you already know, you play as Harman Smith, an assassin with 7 multiple personalities, who all have different skills and whatnot. You run around an amazing map shooting the 'Heaven Smiles' and saving the world.
The main difference to most action adventures is the movement. Just press x and away you go, till you come to a junction. Then you pick one and off you go again! Sounds bizarre but is very easy to get used to. When you shoot, you do it in the 1st person, holding R1 to aim and L2 for scan for your enemies, as they can't be seen by the naked eye. A brilliant idea, as you can't see them until they start laughing.
Some have complained that the in game dialouge isn't in any proper language, but so what? The strange English/Japanese hybrid is spooky (just wait till you meet Suzie), a huge plus in my book.
The game has a great upgrades system too, implementing a TV set and blood collected from your enemies to upgrade your weapons, power and so on.
BUY THIS GAME! You'll be doing yourself a favour, it's utter genius!
