Don't waste your time and money on inkjet again!
Having suffered over the years with various inkjet printers, buying ink at an alarming rate and constantly unblocking them and still getting rubbish printouts, I needed a new approach to printing.

Once I thought that laser printers were expensive and only for businesses, but now you can get printers like this for around £50, which considering how long toner lasts and how reliable these are, is very good value for money.

Okay, the Samsung ML1610. I think that this printer is most suited for home users or very small businesses looking to print documents (e.g. it will come in useful for me for college, but an art student might still need an inkjet for printing out photos). The printer is fantastic for text and printing web pages, but photos don't look too good, but who really prints out a lot of those anyway. Most photos nowadays stay on the computer.

Print speed is quick, especially for the low price; 16ppm (on paper, no pun intended). However, I use Ubuntu Linux, and some programs and print jobs seem to print each page like a seperate document which really slows it down. The only program so far to print multiple pages fast is Adobe Reader. This will probably work fine for Windows XP though.

One thing I really like is the toner save button. It saves some toner, which means the cost per page is lower. You can see the difference when you compare these documents to non toner-saved (?) documents, but on their own they're more than acceptable.

The printer was very easy to set up, and it is brilliant that Samsung now support Linux properly, including easy software on the CD. I didn't even need to use that, because the printer was automatically detected. Excellent. I can only assume it will be just as easy on Windows.

Okay, gripes. The paper input tray is always out and open, which I suppose is the price to pay for such a small laser printer. However, the dust cover doesn't really fit properly on mine, and sits wonky. Not a major issue, just a minor annoyance.

The most major annoyance is the lack of a USB cable, and I'm glad I'd bought one beforehand. It's a problem with most printers though, but seeing as Samsung are going further with support for Linux, you might think they would include a USB cable (which actually only cost me a couple of quid, so must cost pennies to include in the box).

And last of all, on output sometimes the pages can be a bit curled at the edges, which might not look too professional.

Overall, this is a very tiny printer with very good printing and excellent Samsung build quality, and an astonishingly low price tag (didn't get mine off Amazon, mind you, mine was cheaper, but I'll leave you to DAB in that yourself), but I did buy the cable from here, you'll need a USB A to B one by the way. You'll only really get better than this by spending hundreds of pounds of a professional business printer, so highly recommended.

Quite good if you get a discount
I bought mine at 50% of retail to replace an ML1520 which needed a full replacement cartridge - original gave up after 2 powder refills and new ML 1610 was same price.

Installation - very easy on XP

Speed - It's relatively fast

Output - no problems found with normal MS Office, pdf's and web site prints

Drawbacks -

the paper tray cover does not fit well and could allow unwanted content into tray (especially staples)

I believe the all-in-one cartridge is 'chipped' and may expire before toner expired (ML 1520 was not), and the one supplied new is not completely full of toner.
Also it's not easy to refill with powder like ML 1520

Annoyance - paper output sometimes gets caught up in the guide of the top tray, it might be better off without it at all

Overall - full retail price is a lot to pay for what you get, shame they stopped the ML 1520

Workhorse printer that's as reliable as anything
I've had this little printer for 1 year now, and I can safely say it's the best printer I've ever had in a decade or so of home computing. Simple to install on XP, uses USB to connect to the computer, so it's up and running in no time. It has a 3-second warm up time, and prints a sheet in about 5-7 seconds. Quality is comparable to any of the work printers I've ever used (those huge HP beasts), and it's perfect for printing out a map from google, or a presentation, or just a letter.

The minor caveat is that the plastic cover for the paper tray doesn't fit perfectly but, frankly, I've taken it off and haven't looked back since.

Highly recommended.
