Editorial Reviews
From the Label
After over a year away, Craig is now set to return with his most intimate record yet. Recorded chiefly with long-time collaborator Mark Hill, the pair got back to basics and refocused their attention on killer melodies and striking lyrics. Craig admits, "Our approach with this album has been like the first one in a lot of respects, there was such a long period of time between albums, it felt really natural. With Mark and I the production is just the icing on the cake. A lot of people put so much effort into their production but there's no real song there. I try to stay away from that. I have really taken a lot of time to make sure the songs are at the forefront".
The result is a startlingly honest, soulful record where Craig's personality and experiences take centre stage. In taking time out from his career, he has rediscovered what moves him, what makes him get on the dance floor and what has shaped the person he is now and all that is translated into a powerfully emotive album, fittingly titled The Story Goes... With the focus firmly on his smoothly striking vocals, lyrics about love, life and nights out partying are truly a reflection of the last two years of Craig's life and the man behind the hits and headlines. With production by Mark Hill, The Underdogs and Rick Nowels, The Story Goes... moves seamlessly from the lovelorn pleas of "My Love Don't Stop" and "Separate Ways" to the gently affecting "Johnny", where Craig explores the difficult issue of bullying. "It all fell into place for me writing about it and I knew it was something I could talk about because I experienced a form of it at school. You feel like you're in a black hole when it's happening and you don't know what to do and that's what I was trying to capture. It's a massive issue and I don't have the answer to it but I wanted to highlight it, it's a type of exorcism for me".
Other songs were inspired by more recent events. The slick disco beats of "All The Way", the crunky "Just Chillin", the high-energy of "Hypnotic" and the slow and seductive sexuality of `Take `Em Off' were all a consequence of Craig's nights out partying, knowing that--for the first time in years--he didn't have to get up and work in the morning. The Story Goes is an honest journey through Craig's life. People that have touched and inspired him, to the ones he has lost with great sadness, such as with the stunning ballad "Let Her Go", which is dedicated to his Mum, and the beautiful "Don't Love You No More (I'm Sorry)"--a mesmerizing tale of lost love and broken hearts, based on Craig's real-life relationship breakdown. "Every album is a chapter in my life but this one really captures the essence of me. I'm not trying to prove anything to people or make anyone happy, I just feel like I can let loose, step up a gear and say check this. Just when you were wondering what was going on, listen to this for a minute. This is me". The Story Goes is dedicated to Craig's Grandmother who passed away at the end of last year.
Customer Reviews
Excellent in every way
Craig David says he leaves the production side of completing an album to someone else; I would tell you who that is but the writing is so small in the sleeve notes that my aged eyes can't read it! What I can say though is that whoever did it, they did a great job. It's near-on immaculate, and this is such an important part of the final outcome yet many people possibly take it for granted. Anyway, the SQ is superb, and the even better news is that the quality of the song-writing and the delivery of all fourteen songs is superb. It's almost too good, but that wouldn't make sense as a criticism. 'Hypnotic' is a stand-out but to be fair the album as a whole is of a very high standard. I can't think of a single track that I would want to skip, it's all good music. If I had to be critical I would suggest that there isn't a great variety of style when you stand back and think about it, but that would be harsh when it's so evident that everyone involved in the making of this album has worked so hard to create such a polished and classy product. Unlikely to disappoint whether you're familiar with Craig David or not.
Spiritual
Went to Amsterdam in Oct 05 with 3 friends and one of them had "Johnny" on his iPod. After listening to it, was hooked. So got home and I bought this CD and oh my since then until now (21st June 2006) nearly a year, it has virtually been playing in my car continuously on a loop. I cant recommend this enough. Fitting tunes for every occasion: relationships, love, bullying, mesmorised by a girl, cheating, it's got everything, and nearly every song is relatable to everyone's life in some way or another.
hypnotising
This album is being played over and over at the moment, in the car, on the pc, im totally addicted, and hypnotic has got to be one of the best songs ive heard in a long time and by far the best on the album, well done Craig, cant wait for the next release
