The best cRPG bar none, online and offline
I think most people dno't understand that Neverwinter Nights is the most enjoyment you are ever going to get out of one single cRPG and its the only one that allows for endless adventures both created by the community and by yourself if you choose it.
The Official Campaigns allow 100+ hours of enjoyment and while NWN and SoU are worth playing, the final expansion HoTu is especially enjoyable. But thats just the tip of the iceberg - online there are hundreds of hours of free modules by the community showcasing wonderfully talented writers and modders allowing you to experience their stories, many even better than Bioware's own ones. Add to that the ability to download Bioware premium modules once more offering more adventures.
Im not even done - with the toolset you are able to create your own modules with ease. Are you a writer and want people to live your stories? Create one and let people experience your cRPG with the toolset or even better play as a dungeonmaster online and let a group go through your adventure while you react to them on the fly making the world come alive!
If you are a cRPG gamer and have not played a NWN module with a dungeonmaster you have simply not lived. Forget scripted conversations with npcs, now they are possessed by a real player who will respond to all your conversations! Do you want to respond in a way outside the game mechanics? Indicate so and the DM will make it come alive! For example in a game where I had to try and escape from a jail cell, the inmates and I decided to fool the guards by using the old 'injured' prisoner, come in and investigate routine. And the DM responded on the fly by appropriate responces by jailors to the situation. Try 'that' in Oblivion with scripted npcs!
How about all these MMOs that have subscriptions? Log onto one of the many NW persistant worlds ranging from hack and slash to heavy roleplay for free and spend hundreds of hours with other players exploring those entire permanently online worlds! Once more many with DMs making them come alive. How often have you seen an Everquest Live event with GMs? With these youll see them all the time.
Welcome to Neverwinter Nights. I couldnt help but laugh at the reviewer that stated it wasnt good online.. he has no excuse for posting that when he had no clue to all this game was about.
A good game overall
Neverwinter Nights is, on the premise, a great game. Although showing its age against some of the young guns of RPG's (Oblivion, et al) it still holds its own with the good ol' fashioned D&D style of play. The plots are good (especially for Hordes of the Underdark) and the gameplay immersive. What it lacks in graphics, it makes up with a reliable, sturdy game which you can delve in for a long time and not get bored.
The multiplayer will be a bit confusing at first, but it usually depends on the server and the people on it. However, I reccomend the singleplayer more because of the intricate plots and the great relationships you form with the many characters.
One downfall, however, is the sound. Some of the characters cries in battle will get tiresome and tedious after a long time, tempting you to turn the sound down. This is a real letdown.
But, NWN is now at a low price- buy it!
Getting old but still has potential
Neverwinter Nights is one of the better RPGs still available. Although beginning to show its age now, it still has a lot going for it. It has excellent graphics and effects on display and some nice scenery here and there too. The game is third person perspective RPG all the way, with fixed camera views of 4 different angles. The game uses the AD&D rules set.
The usual options of warrior, ranger, rogue, wizard and paladin are available as are a few choices for race, so its all familiar territory. And the single player game is worth buying the game for alone. Rich environments, a decent plot to follow, excellent bad guys to beat and henchmen to hire, which you can pick to match the way you play (good guy/bad guy stylee). The game begins with you being asked to help find a cure for a terrible disease and quickly expands to the familiar sub-plots and side quests which all help progress the character through the levels. Even on completing this part of the game (and this is no short game), there are various expansion packs available to quench your thirst – Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark. But now that age is beginning to take its toll on effects, graphics etc (although not yet enough to really detract from the game), the big sell with this game is really the online potential.
The NWN packs come with a very powerful level editor and people have been building and playing these online for some time now, to great effect (up to 64 players).
At this point in time though it’s worth noting that a lot of newer, better online RPGs are out or coming soon – what NWN has going for it is the complete controllability of the environment. Players are literally creating their nights gaming experience from the ground up, tailored exactly the way they want them! And with the great editing engine provided this should provide almost unlimited gaming!
Get one of the box sets which has all the packs included and this will provide RPG gaming far outweighing the cost!
