CD Description
The musical accompaniment to George Clooney's biopic of journalist Ed Murrow, GOODNIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK, is crammed withcontemporary jazz versions of 1940s and '50s favorites like"Straighten Up and Fly Right" and Dinah Washington's novelty hit "TV Is the Thing This Year" (minus the original's slightly risqu verses). Reeves, together with a combo that includes saxophonist Matt Catingub and pianist Peter Martin, conjures an authentic cigarette-and-Martini soaked atmosphere onan exceptional soundtrack that's also a fine album in its own right.

Outstanding Dianne
The soundtrack to George Clooney's noteworthy film was intended to evoke the America in the 50s. Not so much the excessive paranoia of the McCarthy years (the subject of the film) as the reflective atmosphere of a night club in the early hours of the morning. The set shows Dianne Reeves' virtues, a showcase for her ability to handle all tempos, from the uptempo swing of 'You're Driving Me Crazy' to the introspective melancholy of 'One For My Baby', with a nod to Billie Holiday and the straight blues of Nat King Cole's 'Straighten Up and Fly Right'. Her debt to Sarah Vaughan can be heard on her phrasing on 'How High the Moon' and 'Too Close for Comfort.' Dinah Washington is evoked on the novelty, period song, 'TV Is The Thing This year.' With the exception of Ellington's 'Solitude' I don't recall her having sung any of this material before.
Ms Reeves' regular band is featured, together with the addition of tenor saxophonist, Matt Catingub. With his warm, breathy tone, it's impossible not to make comparisions with the late, great Ben Webster, but that's intended as a complement to Catingub. She doesn't normally include a saxophonist in her band and on the evidence, perhaps she should reconsider. Catingub fills in behind her vocals in the manner of many tenor sax/vocalist partnership and it adds an extra dimension to the music. Listen to 'Gotta Be This or That' and the only original in the set, 'Who's Minding the Store' and discover the richness of her vocal timbre.
My only criticism is that some of the songs are disappiontingly short and do not allow room for improvisation, which would be a feature of a cabaret performance. It is worth remembering therefore that this was primarily a soundtrack album, rather than a jazz album.
It's a pleasure to hear her stretch out on primarily jazz material, something which she began on her previous album for Blue Note, 'What a little Moonlight can do'. While her interpretations of pop and other cross over material have been always worth listening, straight jazz is her metier and this set really shows off her virtues.
Highly recommended.
Introducing a new generation to music of the '50s and '60s.
The inspired collaboration of jazz singer Dianne Reeves and saxophonist/arranger/director Matt Catingub results in a CD which epitomizes much of the cabaret music of the '50s and '60s. Reeves's full, rich contralto is set off to perfection here by Catingub's sax, the timbre of her voice matching that of his tenor sax. Her ability to express the emotion of the lyrics while maintaining total control of her magnificent voice parallels that of some of the greats of the period--Sarah Vaughan, Helen Merrill, Chris Connor--while her background in modern jazz gives a fresh sound to these songs from a generation ago.
The arrangements of Honolulu-born Catingub are so true to the period that they sound as if they could have been written for Mel Torme, Sinatra, or any of cabaret's best "girl singers." Son of jazz legend Mavis Rivers, for whom he did the arrangements late in her career, Catingub knows the '50s and '60s inside out--its sultry rhythms and funky beats, the soft romanticism of the ballads, and the importance of voice and instruments creating a single mood. Here, with his sax contributions, the wonderfully subtle piano of Peter Martin, the bass of Robert Hurst, and the drums of Jeff Hamilton accompanying Dianne Reeves, no additional instrumentation is needed.
Most of the songs are gorgeous ballads, often with strong, vampy beats, including "Straighten Up," "I've Got My Eyes on You," "Gotta Be This or That," "Pretend," "In My Solitude," and "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall," all songs familiar to lovers of music of the period. Less familiar (and my favorite on the album) is "Who's Minding the Store?" a moody, melancholy ballad in a minor key, with the piano and sax helping to create the mood. Peggy Lee's "There'll be Another Spring" may be the prettiest song on the CD, and "When I Fall in Love" is the only instrumental. Dinah Washington's novelty song "TV is the Thing This Year," is rock/jive, and "Too Close for Comfort" and "You're Driving Me Crazy," pick up the tempo and beat.
A fantastic collaboration which gives new life to song standards that are forty to fifty years old, this CD introduces new audiences to music from the '50s and '60s and to the voice of Dianne Reeves. Those who have enjoyed this CD will hear an equally brilliant (but different-sounding) Dianne on "A Little Moonlight," "In the Moment: Live in Concert," and "The Calling: Celebrating Sarah Vaughan," all of which have won Grammy Awards. Gorgeous, silky smooth vocal jazz
I first came to the realisation that I needed this CD when I found myself just leaving the DVD's Main Menu on so I could have the music on in the background. The first thing I noticed when the album arrived is that there are fifteen tracks on here, which is a lot for any CD, let alone one with music of this calibre. With the first track you're thrown straight in at the deep end, and Dianne Reeves' smooth yet rich vocals surround you.
The tracks range from toe-tapping speedy runs such as 'You're Driving Me Crazy' to the sweet gentle flow of tracks like 'Solitude'. Each track is an experience in its own right, and you'll find you'll turn to this CD almost no matter what your mood, since there is such a broad range. Favourites for me (very difficult to choose) would probably be 'Straighten Up And Fly Right', 'Solitude' and 'Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall'.
This CD would serve well as background music for nights in with a partner, and could accompany a CD from Steve Cole in a shuffle very well. If you even remotely like jazz, this CD is a must have. You'll definitely find something you like, be it Reeves' stunning vocal performance, the warm timbre of the saxophone performances, the toe-tapping percussion and bass lines, or the perfectly performed piano accompaniments. Even without the movie, this CD would certainly stand on its own, and it deserves to be a part of every true music lover's music collection.
