Editorial Reviews
Album Description
In 1983 saxophonist Kirk Whalum caught the ear of Bob James, subsequently recording and performing with the pianist. Following this break he signed for Columbia, recorded five albums and on moving to LA to work with Larry Carlton, became an "in demand" session player recording and performing with Nancy Wilson, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross, Barbara Streisand, Quincy Jones and others. A move to Warner saw him record eleven CDs and also perform on a number of high profile movie soundtrack recordings including, unforgettably, Whitney Houston's 1993 release, "The Bodyguard".
A later hit for Houston was, of course, "Exhale (Shoop, Shoop") penned by singer, producer and songwriter "Kenneth Babyface" Edmonds. "Babyface" was an inescapable presence in virtually every facet of pop music in the 1990's writing hits for Madonna, Boyz II Men, Johnny Gill and others as well as working with artists such as Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige and Eric Clapton.
Kirk Whalum's debut CD for Dave Koz's Rendezvous Entertainment now pays tribute to this giant of contemporary music, gathering together twelve instrumental versions of "Babyface's" most outstanding songs. What results is a double helping of soul and sensitivity, combining the saxophone artistry of Kirk Whalum with the timeless melodies of a pop/urban/r&b icon.
