we remember 4
June,2005 and a night dedicated to ECW,a company which was formed in 1992 by tod gordon and died in 2001 when the owner at the time paul heyman went bankrupt in 2001,so in truth vince nor eric really killed ECW,although their fingerprints were on the proverbial corpse in one way or another,so for four years we heard nothing about ECW and under the guidance of paul heyman and with the approval of vince mcmahon a night was created to celebrate the madness that was ECW.
ECW was a small time company that reigned in pain and excess,no real rules and plenty of blood and aside from the low quality in production, provided an exciting alternative to the high flying but somewhat safe limitations of WWF and WCW,i was a WWF lad all the way though.
Ok,enough history, this night served as a reminder of the power of a dead beast brought back to life and we had some superb matches and shoots, which are promos served with brutal honesty,we had an invasion,we had homages paid,a realfanatical crowd, now onto the matches.
The event opened with lance storm going up against chris jericho was lionheart for that night,a tribute to himself in yesteryear, the crowd went wild and we were off, this was a very good opening, loads of passion and energy and great commentary from joey styles, who was so energetic on the mic alongside mick foley,a blinding wee opener.
A three way dance was up next, this was a term used by ECW,and is essentially an elimination match, the three men were supercrazy, tajiiri and little guido, all men had sidekicks with the exception of supercrazy and this was a great eventful and packed match that really got the crowd frothing at the mouth.
Next up was a match that wasnt that great and that hurts when you consider that rey mysterio jr and psychosis were involved was a total let down,it wasnt the worst match in the world but these men have had matches that deserved standing ovations in the past, much of the blame lies at the feet of a crowd who werent into this really and turned on psychosis who was without his mask, the crowd werent in it,and the wrestling stuttered,i mention the crowd here alot but ECW and the crowd go hand in hand.
Next up was a great match, sabu went up against rhyno, this math followed a great shoot by RVD,who couldnt compete and he was gutted, the match itself was savage and lively and a real captivating encounter, hard to beat, the arabian skullcrusher, what a move.
Next up was a match with two scolded men who didnt recover from the lack of respect thrown their way, chris benoit against a very moody eddie guerrero, these men left ECW early in their careers and the fans were hurt that they did, they returned but people remembered the hurt and the match felt a bit forced, both men have had matches together that rank as all time classics, strictly speaking this isnt one, although there was some great countering of moves and some great moves flying over the place, the sour faces on both men meant that we were a bit shortchanged.
Next up was match of the night hands down, mike awesome was pitted against masato tanaka, this match was out of this world,it really was,you want bodies smashing through tables, then give this match all the consideration in the world, you want powerbombs that will make you look away, then this will suit you,you want an in ring chemistry that is convincing and hard to find, then this will also float your boat, this was a match that may not have raised pulses when announced but when it was over the crowd were standing and going mad,ah yes, joey styles went off on one about mike awesome that needs to be heard.
Main event time,a tag team match between the dudleys and sandman with tommy dreamer,it took a while to get going due to people piling the ring to get their heat across and so forth, but when it did i was impressed, savage and manic, there was plenty to embrace here, including a cheesegrater across foreheads, flaming tables and more, yes i liked this.
More was to follow as stonecold steve austin appeared and picked a fight between the ECW icons and the WWE stars in attendance, forgive the pun,but he was like a ringmaster, egging on both brands and then taking a seat for a brawl to end all brawls, well maybe it wasnt that good but it was great to see it,a very pleasing and reflective night indeed,so popular was this that it wasnt long before vince mcmahon brought the brand back but it is certainly played to the sound of his drum for sure, for one final look at the ECW ethos then this will do nicely.

Brilliant5
I won a box set of the entirety of the WWE 2005 ppvs, and this EASILY takes the cake. There are some great matches on some of the other 2005 ppvs, such as matt hardy vs edge in a cage at unforgiven, or the mysterio vs guerrero ladder match at summerslam, but as a pay per view they were still weak. Obviously you'd expect more from an ECW ppv, and despite having the WWE label, and being funded by vince mcmahon this is excellent. If you like harcore matches, but think all the OTT blood is a bit ridiculous, you'll love this. Loads of chair shots, tables (especially in the Mike Awesome match) and a great main event. The ending is predictable, but still very good, and the Sandman's entrance is the best entrance I have EVER seen.

All in all definately 5 stars, and much better than what WWE are producing at the moment, so give it a go. You won't be dissapointed.
