Product Description

Best-of collection from cult art-funk-metal combo whose charismatic and provocative image and anything-goes approach made them one of the most popular and influential groups of the 90s. This release compiles material from the band's three major label albums - their 1988 studio debut 'Nothing's Shocking', 1990's breakthrough hit 'Ritual De Lo Habitual' and 2003's long-delayed comeback 'Strays'.

great but no surprises4
The importance of janes addiction as an alt-rock trailblazer should not be underestimated, the '87 live album on XXX and the '88 Nothings Shocking being, in the context of the time, truely groundbreaking. Of course now that's getting on for 20 years ago, but still the music stands on its merits, rather than just the initial novelty - if you're looking for an introduction to Janes Addiction, look no further. Having said that, you can get ALL their 6 albums (the XXX release, Nothings Shocking, Ritual, Kettle Whistle, the live & rare compilation and Strays) for a total of about 20 quid these days - this compilation contains nothing new, the difference in sound quality is minor, and if you get the set, you can discover all the wonderful gems that didn't make it onto Catacombs

Fun hard rock5
At first they sound terrible. But like many good bands it takes a few listens for it to click. And when it does you'll find plenty of excellent songs. The unusual vocals, like Geddy Lee's in Rush, takes a bit to get used to, but once you've heard them for a while they sound fine.

They have a strangely powerful sound and interestingly sleazy lyrics.

I particularly liked the live version of Jane Says. It has a real lethargic druggy ambience with unusual steel drums.

I would have bought the two studio albums instead, but they haven't been remastered since they were released, so I bought this instead.

I thought the two tracks from the album Strays sounded as good as anything else on this Best Of.

NOTE 1/10/08: I have since bought the first two albums. The songs sound IDENTICAL to the remastered versions.

This Best of is great and I do still recommend it, though I would suggest skipping it and just buying the albums instead. You can then recreate most of this Best Of using the playlist function on your MP3 player.

A "best of" cd from a band with only 3 albums???4
OK, I will be the first to admit that technically they released 4 albums, but the first release was just a live album of "Nothing's Shocking" so that don't count!!!

But the point remains, Janes Addiction were an awesome band & wrote great songs for the albums Nothing Shocking & Ritual de lo Habitual. The comeback album Strays was JA trying to be something that they weren't & for me it didn't work.

So with that said it's very hard to knock this best of effort cos it's filled with great songs...it's just if you are looking to buying this album you'll probably have Nothings Shocking & Ritual de lo Habitual already, so what's the point?
