Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review:

In a nutshell:
The girls from Dead or Alive are back in the Xbox 360’s first ever beat ‘em-up. The usual mix of stunning graphics, accessible gameplay and bouncing chests combine with an all new online mode for one of the most feature packed fighters ever.

The lowdown:
In hardcore beat ‘em-up circles Dead or Alive is often sneered at for being too shallow, but although it may not have the depth of some of its rivals this is the perfect game for first time fighters. The combat has been tightened up since the first game, so that it’s much harder to perform counters and there are less overly powerful super moves. One thing that hasn’t changed is the amazing graphics, particularly the various backdrops with a fight in a market where every apple on every stall can be sent flying. The game is still relentlessly sexist in its portrayal of women but treat it as Carry On Virtua Fighter and you won’t be disappointed.

Most exciting moment:
Countering everything your opponent can throw at you and then knocking them all the way down the stairs of the Temple on the Mountain stage.

Since you ask:
One of the best unlockable secrets in the game is the chance to play as Spartan-458 – a female version of Master Chief from Halo. She even gets her own level based on Nassau Station.

The bottom line:
A showcase for the power of the Xbox 360 and a fun, accessible beat ‘em-up to boot.

Great Fighter, Slick But takes Too Much Effort to master.5
This is a very good fighter like the others in the series, great graphics great animation great interface. However it has to be said that if you are going to go online youre going to have to know every move on every character and how to counter (which i cant figure out out how to do effectively).
There are some stupidly hard tasks and combos DOA4 asks of you, but if youre like me and stick to the easy combos you CAN COMPLETE everything on single player, despite other people moaning about it. Its not that hard when you get used to it. It IS stressful however when you come back to it after a while and you forget all the good combos for each character, just remember yor new tv and xbox 360 costs a lot of money and you DONT want to hit it, ive bought a stress ball to stop me doing this (ive also got a smiley face cushion that i punch aswell). Leave your hardware alone when playing any fighter.

P.S. The graphics ARE great, if anyone has a VGA box on the PS2 or the XBOX 1, compare it with DOA2 and DOA3 you will tell straight away. Plus team ninja have updated the backgrounds more than the character models.

Dead............or maybe Alive?4
How to begin? I really couldn't decide whether to give this game three, four, or even five stars. Eventually, I settled for the middle. The thing is that this game is great at first but becomes somewhat lacking later. I have played other DOA games but this is the first that I have owned. At first I thought that the fighting engine was really fun and unique but it soon got a little boring. In fairness however, the fast paced counter system requires skill to use correctly. The AI is decent, but a little too predictable. The charcters and fun and varied and the real reason that I got this game was for Sparten 458! However, this Halo charcter really doesn't fit in to DOA and it feels weird using her. Still, the game is fantastic at first and you will start going through phases of playing it. During these phases you will have a lot of fun, especially in a less predictable multiplayer match. The fun you have a few times a month or so is enough to give it four stars, because when it's fun, it's really fun. It's the sort of game that you won't play too often, but will never trade in. As for people who say that the game is too hard, it isn't. Sure, it's tough, even on the easiest difficulty, but it's just a challenge that rewards skill and perserverence. I had unlocked all the charcters and most of the costumes after my second day of gaming, so it's not impossible. As for who this game is for.... if you like DOA or just fighting games, it's worth picking up. If the Halo charcter is what you're after, then you may as well forget about it, it's not worth the money. Bottom line: A fun game in short bursts.

Great Game5
Having read the last two highly critical reviews I am prompted to write one myself! The game is hard and I would agree one of the last bosses is super hard and significantly tougher than any other character in the game. However I am nearly 40 years old and haven't had a console for over 15 years and yet I have managed to complete each character in Story Mode. Whilst it is challenging it is not impossible as previous reviewers would indicate. The graphics are gorgeous and it is make me hanker for an HD TV. My 4 year old daughter loves this game - my 63 year old Mother in Law loves this game - Buy It - It's Fantastic
