What's new and improved?
Stronger Security and Data Protection
The best way to protect against the damage of viruses is to prevent its installation. Symantec extends its best of breed antivirus removal technology to handle the latest spyware and adware threats and handle the unique side effects of these threats (i.e., registry, processes, files, changes to LSPs) in real time. Norton AntiVirus blocks Home/ hijacking spyware before the user's web page can be redirected.
Adaptive Personalised Protection
The new Norton Protection Center is a common destination point that automatically/dynamically tailors itself to an individual user's preferences, behavior and environment to provide a personalized view of their computer protection status.
The new Norton Risk Assessment Model automatically removes dangerous programs without decisions required by the end user, but for those programs that may be tied to legitimate applications, Norton AntiVirus will guide the user though the steps required to safely protect desired applications from the dangerous programs.
Key Features & Benefits:
Removes Viruses, Worms, and Trojan Horses Automatically
Detects and removes viruses, worms and Trojan horses automatically, without interrupting users' work.

Spyware and Other Security Risks Detection
Expands Norton AntiVirus' protection beyond viruses, worms and Trojans to include detection of certain types of non-virus threats such as spyware, adware and keystroke loggers which can be used maliciously to:
Proactive Protection with QuickScan
Users have an additional scanner called QuickScan that will scan the system upon receipt of the latest virus definitions and automatically remove those threats with improved removal capabilities.
Email Scanning
Scans and Cleans Both Incoming and Outgoing Email. Detects viruses lurking in email attachments before users' even save or launch the attachment, to avoid the risk of unknowingly forwarding viruses to others.
Continues to protect mail clients that use standard POP3 mail protocol, and it automatically configures email protection for commonly used clients such as:
Up-to-Date Protection
Notifies users when their virus definition files are out-of-date and guides them to renew their subscription to receive protection updates if their subscription has expired.
Compressed File Archive Support
Provides real-time scanning of compressed file archives, which users download from the internet (including Instant Messenger and Peer-to-Peer networks) and detects virus infections even before users open the files.
Powerful Detection and Repair Options

Scan and Deliver lets users submit a file with a suspected or unrepairable virus quickly and easily to Symantec Security Response team. If Symantec Security Response experts determine that the file contains a new, unknown virus, a Symantec Security Response engineer creates a new virus definition and sends it to the user.

Uses Bloodhound heuristic technology, which detects virus-like behaviour, to identify and repair unknown viruses.
LiveUpdate

Protection updates are essential in keeping computers protected against new virus threats and other security risks. If users' don't connect to the internet frequently, Norton AntiVirus prompts them to run LiveUpdate when their virus definitions are dangerously out-of-date.** **Twelve months of virus definition service updates included with purchase of Norton AntiVirus 2006; annual subscriptions available online for subsequent updates.
Symantec Automated Support Assistant
Allows users to efficiently help themselves via direct links from error dialogs and key features (e.g. LiveUpdate) to an online troubleshooting system with relevant support information.
Symantec offers users free online technical support options that automatically determine which products and versions are on a customer's machine and whether the user has the most up-to-date product patches. Using this information, the assistant attempts to diagnose the issue and provide customized solutions, eliminating the need to search through the online support knowledge base.
Customer Reviews
Overly Complex, Bloated, Firewall Problems
Norton Antivirus 2006 certainly does it's job when it comes to blocking viruses and stopping unwanted websites/applications from accessing your PC. However, the software is overly complex, bloated, and hungry on system resources. It also can cause a lot of problems for users with a Home Network.
My computer runs Windows XP (Service Pack 2). Windows XP has it's own built-in in Windows Firewall, but Norton AntiVirus 2006 ALSO has it's own firewall (aka Internet Worm Protection). In my experience, having Norton's firewall turned on can cause a lot of problems. It makes MSN Messenger 7.5 extremely slow to sign-in, and reduces the speed of file transfers between users. It also causes conflicts with Network printers/scanners, making Windows XP unable to detect them!
In my experience, the older Norton AntiVirus 2004 was a much better piece of software than the newer Norton AntiVirus 2006. If you already have an older version, my advice is to stick with it. The older versions are far simpler, streamlined, run faster, and don't include a firewall. I personally intend to sell my 2006 version, and downgrade back to 2004.
Another disillusioned Norton customer
I would have given this product ZERO stars, but Amazon doesn't seem to like this rating! I have a tale to tell about my experience with Norton Internet Security which I hope will help others when they are looking for PC protection.
Two years ago, I bought Norton Internet Security Suite 2004 to protect my laptop. I wondered why everything started to run slowly, especially every Excel spreadsheet and Word document that I worked on, but assumed more memory would sort the problem - it didn't make much difference, but I soldiered on. I renewed my subscription to NIS after a year, even though Liveupdates took ages to download and install, and failed more often than they succeeded, and scanning my hard drive (about 20Gb of files) typically took 4 hours and refused to let me work at the same time that it was running.
This year's renewal came around, and Norton told me that the version I have is no longer supported - the upgrade to 2006 is only a few pounds more than renewing a licence for an unsupoorted product - no brainer! So I ordered the upgrade to 2006 from Amazon and installed it but, once installed seemingly successfully, it's icon sat in the system tray disabled and every time I clicked the icon it said that it was performing "Initial Configuration Tasks" that would take a few minutes. I left my laptop alone for a few hours but when I came back to it and tried to start Norton, I got the same message. I rebooted several times - no change. I went to their online assistance website and downloaded several diagnostic tools, which did nothing, just told me that I had not Activated the product nor had I configured it. But I can't do either of those things because Norton wont start up! As a last resort I uninstalled the whole thing, and rebooted. And lo!, my system worked noticeably faster! I opened a large Excel spreadsheet and it opened in the blink of an eye - with Norton installed it could take over a minute to open the same spreadsheet!
I have wasted 8 hours of my life trying to get the 2006 version working, and I feel disinclined to spend any more time on it! Other reviews of Anti-Virus software recommend better products, and cheaper, than Norton. Most of the reviews of Norton IS that I have come across since are very anti rather than pro. I should have been warned. My advice to anyone looking at AV software is read all reviews very thoroughly, do your homework, and don't buy Norton just because it is a well-known name!
Do your job and leave me alone!
I had an old version of Norton (2002 I believe) that came with my PC. It used to sit nicely in the tray, doing its job silently and efficiently. Ah, happy days. When I was notified that it was obsolete and it finally conked out, I invested £30 downloading this "upgrade" from the web site. I did so because I was happy with the previous install, but now I may have to forfeit my £30 and shop around for something that does not think my PC exists merely to let it run riot.
I'm sure Norton's protection is as good as any, and the addition of spyware checking is reassuring, but here are the niggles that I have experienced:
1) Symantec's website tries to sucker you into buying extras you don't really need. Aggressive marketing maybe more suited to the companies Norton is protecting you against.
2) The install is a pain. Takes a good couple of hours of rebooting with confusing error messages left, right and centre.
3) It eats up CPU like nothing on Earth. When NAVW32.exe runs of its own accord, it seriously interferes with your other tasks. Your machine is pretty much unusable until it has finished going about its business. I am only writing this review because as this precise time, the online pool game I logged on for is unplayable.
4) There is a whole "Norton Worm Protection" vs "Windows Firewall" issue for which I cannot find any definite resolution on the web.
5) Norton pops up and interrupts you to tell you everything is OK. When things are OK, I want you to keep quiet! Only bother me if there is something I need to do.
I hope that Symantec are listening and will put out patches to fix the CPU greed. Having used Norton all my life I have never had cause to think of looking anywhere else... until now.
