the mistress of rock/pop
Alanis Morrisette delivers a great 'Greatest hits' compilation here. Lyrically, Alanis is the mistress songs like 'you outta know' 'Ironic' 'that I would be good' are all proof of this. Musically she is most definitely a genius, her cover of 'Crazy' is wonderful.
Greatest Hits: compilations for fans or good opportunities to introduce one's work to non - but potential- ones?
That is the question, really. If you are not necessarily a 'fan', but a greatest hits collector you expect to find the 'hits'. If you are a fan you could be disappointed if your favourite tracks are missing or there are very few new songs included. So I guess I can see the point of view of all reviewers.
I am not a loyal Alanis fan, I simply like the texture of her voice, and her music belongs to the genre I prefer (something that I personally would describe as acoustic rock). Tracks like 'Hands clean', 'Crazy', 'Uninvited' and my favourite 'Thank you' were all included; plus, I found 'Let's do it' irresistibly cute - and surprisingly colourful for Alanis' 'repertoire'. It is not improbable at all that I might have missed a lot of great songs that were not included in the compilation - I guess this is the challenge with greatest hits albums.
I can't really speak for those that have been following her career, but for greatest hits' collectors or for those that have generally appreciated Alanis' work through the years I would recommend the CD, it is representative of her music alright.
I would also recommend Sarah McLachlan's 'Mirrorball' and, if you are really into soft/acoustic rock' go for Elisa Toffoli's albums Labyrinth and Pearl Days.
mmmm!
This, by no means nastily is not a very good collection of Alanis's work, it has some stand out tracks alright but where are Out Is Through, Precious Illusions,Joining You, Excuses, Mary Jane, 21 Things - you know the real Alanis grabbers. I am a huge Alanis fan and was extremley disappointed at the tracks that had been chosen for this release, i wonder if Alanis had anything to do with it at all!! - Of course JLP, was Alanis's masterpiece - then the UK decided to diss her with everything she did, OK SFIJ was a bit of a naff follow up but URS, was equally as infectuous as her debut cd, however it bombed in the UK, and it seemed that the country had turned it's back on Alanis-and with the release of her cd So Called Chaos, which took Alanis to a different level of her career - it seemed we had forgotten about her. I expect Alanis, in the same vane as Carly Simon, Tori Amos etc will disappear from releasing records for chart hits and release imports across the net, let's face it - if they get no credit who can blame them!! i look forward to a proper Greatest Hits release, and a revamp of the nasty, anger coming out one more time for Alanis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
