Editorial Reviews
From the Label
Playing The Angel is the 11th Depeche Mode studio album, and the first to include songs written by frontman Dave Gahan. Playing The Angel was recorded in Santa Barbara and produced by Ben Hillier, who has recently worked with The Doves, Blur and Elbow. Playing The Angel is already being cited by those that have heard it as one of the defining albums of the band's illustrious career.
CD Description
Arguably the only credible surviving stars of synthpop, the Mode return with their eleventh album and follow-up to 2001's 'Exciter'. Recorded with producer Ben Hillier (Doves, Blur) and marking a return to form with a fresh, revitalized update of the band's classic sound, this is being hailed as their best work in years. Includes the single 'Precious'. This special edition includes a DVD featuring 5.1 and LPCM mixes of the whole album and a documentary on its making.
Customer Reviews
Enjoy the Angst
I have to write this review in context of listening to this album on SACD 5.1 and in this format PTA is superb. The production and surround mix make for really good listening with sounds bouncing all over the room. Im sure the dvd surround mix is just as good. Depeche mode really have come a long way and its not been an easy ride at times for them. This is refelected in the introverted sounds they now produce and its a sound they have perfected, Its also a sound thats not to everyones taste and as they slide further and further into this gothic electro stance they are sure to polarise their fanbase. Im a great fan of this current sound and never liked the Vince Clark poppiness sound of either early DM or Erasure. The band that was a pop synth happy clappy bunch found themselves huge stars on the release of Violater and they quickly tipped over into turmoil, drug addiction, and in fighting amongst themselves and this has been reflected in their music ever since, Its something that will be reflected in their sound forever now and it just goes to prove that fame/money/power is not all its cracked up to be and can be really destructive but it also makes for an angst and edge within their writing that they couldnt have without going through the torments that they have been through. World weary sadness pervades most of DM music these days but its a sadness that hits home time and time again. Playing the Angel carries on this sound and altho theres no great suprises its still an excellent album this far into their career
The best album!!! Sounds from another world!!! Still unique!
I've been a fan of the band since 1986....I've got the full collection of albums, including Playing the angel now!!! I was deceived by Exciter because it didn't really have the quality of previous albums....But now I'm very happy to say that Depeche Mode is back in good shape...Everything you could expect from a Depeche Mode album is in there..The sound palette has been renewed...A completely new sound composed of analogue sounds from famous keyboards like Minimoog, ARP 2600 etc...+ The guitar rifts of Martin Gore still very catchy!!! Dave Gahan, the lead singer is in top form, delivering his best vocal performance ever...Anyone who got this album should do one thing..try listening to it with headphones..You'll be impressed by the formidable work that has been done with sounds on that one...It's not surprising that they decided to mix it in 5.1
THANK YOU DEPECHE MODE
We're looking forward for a great tour...And who know...A live video perhaps...
Wow! they're back!
