Cute Cartoon Bloodbath!
Having played the GameCube version of Alien Hominid, I knew that the game just wasn't suited to television-based consoles. The action and visuals were far too simple, the noises far too loud and intrusive, and the game just too short! I knew that this would have better suited a handheld console, where such simple gameplay and noises are the norm.
I wasn't wrong. The simple, side-scrolling, gameplay is fantastic fun on the GBA. Remarkably, the visuals on the Gameboy Advance are almost identical to those of the GameCube, apart from cutscenses that have been translated into still image slideshows. TUNA (the company responsible for the GBA translation) have done an amazing job of representing the artist's original stylish designs in less than half the number of pixels.
The gameplay is basically a run-and-gun, blow-up-everything-in-sight version of Metroid. The player can jump, shoot up and down, and charge up their beam weapon for a more powerful burst. The player, having crash-landed on earth and lost their spaceship, must run through uber-stylish worlds, killing off wave upon wave of government agents from FBI to CIA to KGB. Civilians occasionally help out, handing out powerups to give you a more powerful, spectacular and FUN weapon. There are, of course, the obligatory end-of-level boss fights where the player must find that essential weak spot whilst trying to dodge enemy fire.
Problems: Firstly, some may argue that this game is too short. I managed to complete the entire game in less than an hour. The mini-games that are unlocked as you progress are completely non-functional and worthless, and what's worse, THERE IS NO MULTIPLAYER! This is by far the worst issue, as a single-cartridge co-op game (which IS avaliable on the GameCube) would have really complimented the mad, run-and-gun action. Unfortunately, this means the longevity of the game is virtually nil, but for those people looking for a couple of hours of gory, frenetic and hugely satisfying blasting, check out the Alien Hominid.
