Radiohead before the explosion
At last this great show has been put onto dvd. It captures Radiohead just before the release of their second album The Bends, but most of the songs showcased are from their first album Pablo Honey. I think if you are a Radiohead fan you would agree that the first album was an o.k album, but then again you couldn't really compare it to any of their later stuff as they progressed so quickly into making absolutely incredible music.
So this dvd captures the band just before the explosion.
Thom's singing on every song is incredible. The stand out for me is Street Spirit where his lungs soar into unparalled bliss. Every band member is on form here and clearly enjoying themselves in playing at the legendary Astoria in London. The crowd recognises this and gives the atmosphere a wonderful aurora. If you're a fan this is indispensible. If you're just getting into them I highly recommend this dvd as it's a good start off point. You will not be dissapointed!!
Capturing radiohead live
This dvd captures radiohead playing an absolutely amazing gig. Would thoroughly recommend it to any radiohead fan. The quality of the performance is incredible - Thom Yorke's soaring voice, Jonny Greenwood's frantic yet precise lead guitar, Ed O'Brien's haunting atmospheric sound. The tightness and balance of the band is awe-inspiring.
The gig features songs from Pablo Honey and The Bends (plus a few others). These are radiohead's more 'conventional, pre-experimental' songs, which will appeal to any fans of current UK rock music. They feature catchy melodies, great lyrics and amazing, powerful instrumentals that blow most other bands out of the water.
My only complaint is that this is the only live radiohead DVD since 1994. We want more! We wanna see live performances of songs from OK Computer and beyond. I can only imagine how good a professional recording of Paranoid Android live would be.
Brilliant
An energetic, powerful set from 1994, which sees the band deliver storming renditions of tracks from Pablo Honey and The Bends, as well as a couple of obscure classics. You is an explosive opener, Creep is toweringly anthemic, Vegetable is emotional. The band delivers phenomenal versions of previously unheard tracks from The Bends, including Bones, The Bends, Just, My Iron Lung and Street Spirit, after which the audience seems as blown away as we are on hearing those tracks today. Lost single Pop Is Dead rears its head for a raucous run-through, and one of the highlights of the set is an incendiary rendition of the classic B-Side Maquiladora, which makes the admittedly brilliant record version look decidedly old-school. Overall, the band delivers a record beating performance, with Jonny Greenwood's consistently startling guitar work and Thom Yorke's beautiful vocals leaving the viewer in awe. A rare gem, and a must for all fans of great live music.
