Gripping Grandma.
BBC Radio 3 recently played a track from this album, which I happened to hear while driving in the car. It had an almost hypnotic quality and so carried on listening to it after reaching my destination. I have not bought, or even heard, any Rai music before, but took a gamble and bought the album on Amazon. I have no regrets. This is a stylish, bang up-to-date and captivating recording, and I am sure it will appeal to a very wide range of people, including those who would never dream of listening to 'World Music', let alone Algerian Rai. The track I heard on the radio was 'Guedouzi Mama', which is one of several which has the sort of irresistable beat and charm that would get the sulkiest bunch of teenagers onto the dancefloor. I am tempted to call this a 'crossover' album, but that doesn't do justice to its native integrity or the fact that it is an entirely Algerian production. Suffice to say, I wouldn't be surprised if the octogenarian Cheikha Rimitti appeared on Top of the Pops this summer.
