Amazon.co.uk Review
Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman--leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humour and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. --Bret Fetzer
DVD Description
Andy Stitzer (Carrel) is 40 and seems to have the perfect life- a proud collection of action figures, toys and comic books, cushy job at an electronics store, smart apartment, close friends and a good attitude. However, the one thing missing in his life, something that he hasn’t gotten round to doing, something that most people his age are quite experienced in – he has never ever had sex – not even by accident. His mates see this as their job to help out their buddy and to lure him away from lifelong chastity, and when he meets Trish – a 40 year old mother of three it seems to be the answer to all their plans.
The DVD also includs deleted scenes, gag reel, extended and alternate versions of scenes, waxing scene, audition tapes, rehearsals, extended song performances, Judd Apatow’s daily video diary and " my lunch with a porn star" – where actor and producer Seth Rogan enjoys his lunch with various different porn stars.
Synopsis
Andy Stitzer has everything he needs in his life except a girlfriend. He's never even made love to a woman and he's forty years old. When he meets his dream date, Trish, their relationship begins with a no-sex rule...

Daft but funny
This is really quite an entertaining film. All about the often embarrassing male pursuit for sexual adventures, and the occasional bizarre outcomes, this film has some very funny scenes indeed. It's slightly zany, and very much tongue in cheek, but, the message seems to be, our 40 year old hero is more like us than we'd care to admit. Good fun with plenty of laughs.
Classic comedy
This film is very funny, and for my age, I can relate to it. My sons and I all watched it and we enjoyed it stupendously. Fantastic for all the family and one of the best comedies in years. Excellent.
A classic film to be watched again and again
If you are a 40 year old virgin you may find this film uncomfortable. If however you are an average human being who has attempted to connect with the opposite sex or even your own sex you will find this hilarious.
Originally rented this movie not expecting a lot. Boy was I wrong, we have since bought the DVD and usually watch bits of it about once a week.
The dialogue is an accurate interpretation of how adults interact with each other, constantly bickering more like children. The one upmanship of not admitting to what you are really thinking or feeling. The poor descriptions by characters about what life is about. The frustrations of embarrassing yourself in front of others.
It is hard to explain all the excellent bits without inclduing too many spoilers, however the actors involved obviously all get on with each other extremely well and this shines through. Although not all the actors involved in this film are well known they are superb at what they do.
Please see this film and do yourself a favour :)
