Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
On 2004's They Were Wrong, So We Drowned, Liars began to explore the mesmerising motorik of psych-rock. This was in contrast to their dance-punk debut They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top but of course that didn’t bother a band content to write their own rules as they go along To record Drum’s Not Dead the group moved from New York to Berlin, indulged in their krautrock influences a little more and tapped into not one but two muses, represented by two fictional characters: the confident, assertive Drum and the reserved, hesitant Mt. Heart Attack. The record oscillates between these two polar extremes; songs such as "Be Quiet Mt. Heart Attack!" comes on in a rush of broken-down guitar riffs, military rhythms and frontman Angus Andrew's elegant falsetto; "Drum Gets a Glimpse" carries more ethereal melodies alongside a feast of abstract guitar lines and swishing percussive susurrations. At times the band’s pounding double-drums, screaming guitar feedback and howling vocals create a mad sound that makes you yearn for calmer examples of their ethereal voodoo. Luckily on this album, such moments never too far away. --Paul Sullivan
CD Description
Experimental trio Liars follow up 2004's 'They Were Wrong So We Drowned' with this third album. Moving from New York toBerlin, they have injected an unexpected element of traditionalism into their skewed art-rock style; the result is a powerfully rhythmic, ambitious work propelled by the sound of two full drum kits. The single 'The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack' is included, as well as a DVD featuring no less thanthree visual versions of the entire album.
Customer Reviews
it's a grower
been listening to it for a couple of weeks now - as with 'They Were Wrong....', there's definite shades of Sister-era Sonic Youth and the vocals sound alot like The Beta Band in places.
they really have added alot more to the mix this time around - it's hard to believe that this is the same band who debuted with "They Stuck Us All In A Trench....", radical is hardly the word to describe the progression these boys have made over the past few years.
obviously "Drums Not Dead" features some excellent percussion, the band are currently playing with two full drum kits - i'd say the guitars are less wild this time around and there's less of an analog feel to this album than the second lp.
there's some very chilled moments during tracks such as "drum gets a glimpse" & "wrong coat for you mt. heart attack" amongst others - while "let's not wrestle mt. heart attack" & "drum & the uncomfortable can" are pretty damn noisy - which nicely compliemnt these quieter songs ... i'd definitely say this lp features their most experimental guitar work to date.
it's their most cohesive and conceptual work to date, and i for one cannot wait for the full release. the dvd is apparently gonna be wild!
a definite must :)
