Manufacturer's Description
Faces of War is a game of real-time tactics giving players the thrill of leading a squad into open battlegrounds and experiencing the intensity of chaotic WWII battles.
Historical WWII campaigns
By commanding American, English, Soviet and German troops during world-renowned battles including D-Day, winter missions and the storming of Berlin, players will experience the intense atmosphere of World War II thanks to detailed reproductions of environments, military gear, vehicles and weapons.
Player Initiative is Key
Players will freely control historical battles by leading a squad of 6 soldiers. Based on the player's tactical decisions, advanced AI and realistic physics (where anything can be destroyed) no two battles will ever play out in the same way.
Cunning and complex A.I. Tactics
Allow players to gain full control of units on one hand and to concentrate on more strategic aspects on the other. AI controlled soldiers don't simply execute any order given by a player, they think how to do it in the most efficient and safe way. All human units in the game also possess moral characteristics which are influenced by many in-game events.
Unique Best Way 3D Engine
Pushes the threshold of action RTS gaming by supporting modern graphical technologies (bump mapping, per-pixel lighting, specular lighting, bloom effect, etc.), high resolution and realistic game world, cinematographic special effects and realistic physics.
Multiplayer Combat
Up to 16 Players. More than 8 multiplayer modes including Free-for-All, Team-Match and cooperative game modes.

suprised...
I bought this game expecting it to be an improved version of soldiers: heroes of world war two; however, this game seems to have a completely different feel to "soldiers".
For a start, soldiers was more of a commando game where using stealth was important and micromanaging a single soldier to do complex moves and sniping enemy soldiers from a distance etc. but faces is more of an "open warfare" game with frontal assaults where larger amounts of soldiers are used.
One of the problems in soldiers was that is was only possible to effectively control one soldier or tank at a time - so if you have other soldiers in combat, they might (or definitely will - if you leave them in "move at will" mode) do something stupid and get themselves killed.
The developers have realised this, and have made a "squad system" whereby, you control all units as you would for a single soldier. This system works quite well and means that all units are competent fighters.
However, when you select the commander of a squad, you can supposedly control all other soldiers; but if you give him a move order, only he moves - which is not helpful when he is charging at mounted machine guns by himself.
I dont know how the americans have got involved in the making of this game, but the germans and russians are now speaking in american accents; and when a german soldier says "hurry up timo... Ill go report to von berg..." in an american accent, it makes me cringe.
Having said all this, I can see why this game would appeal to others, and to be fair, the squad system is useful and the graphics are much better then soldiers. Anyway, all I can say is: dont treat this game as a sequel to soldiers, they are two different games. if you want a game where you can combine a little strategy with a lot of action and open warfare, buy this game.
