A voice to touch the soul and bring the sun into your life
So if you haven't heard her yet, you should. If you haven't got Like a Star, get that too. That one made you feel how much you could love someone, and this one is just as good - but this one feels like summer in February - it makes you feel like it IS summer, wherever you are, wherever you will be - you listen and the sun comes out from behind the clouds, you lie back on the warmth of her voice - the words and tune bring back memories of time spent in sunnier places and promise they will be here again - just put your records on - this is my favourite song right now....listen to it !!
Best Song By Miles from the Occasionally Contented Songstress
With the benefit of hindsight, and having lived with these recordings for a few years now, "Put Your Records On" is the best song from Corinne's self-titled 2006 album. Helped along by a video that looked as if it had been commissioned by an advertising agency ("Buy this record, and *you* could be cycling down a country lane on a summer's day with this beautiful woman", it seemed to say), the song benefits from a superbly nuanced and soulful vocal performance from Corinne Bailey Rae, plus an understated backing from her band. I recall at the time several magazine features and interviews in which she came across as an uncharacteristically well-balanced and contented individual, happily married, grounded in real life etc. Since then lurid tabloid stories have cast doubt on some of that, but transport yourself back to the pre-Amy Winehouse days of wholesome, healthy Corinne's peak with this wondrous CD single and get the highlight of her 2006 album.
Perhaps prophetically, the B-side is called "Another Rainy Day", but for now forget the rain, wheel out that bicycle and cycle down some summer country lanes in search of the spirit of this superb singer.
