Follow-up to 2004's major-label comeback 'Musicology' from the purple prince of pop. The result is a classy, straight-ahead set of pop, rock, Latin soul and raunchy funk, which includes the single 'Black Sweat'.

mediocre tripe1
I realy dont know what the heck Prince was up to on this album. It is a jumble of him sqawking and squealing and the odd drum thump and guitar string twang...and we are supposed to accept this as funk??? Go back to your roots Prince, that is where your talent lies. Stop this reinvention crap! it flunked with the name squiggle..so drop it with the music!

One of Prince's weakest albums to date...1
If you're new to Prince and are wondering where to start, don't believe the over-zealous fans hailing 3121 as a great album. It's not. It's not even an average album.

For Prince, the songwriting on this album is well below par. Musicology wasn't great, but at least most of the songs were well written with a decent melody. This album has far too much bland, generic R&B drivel on it, it's hard to believe this is the guy who made Parade and Sign O The Times.

I'm not one of those fans who dismiss all of his post-80s output, I actually really enjoyed last years Planet Earth (which is far superior to anything on 3121).

Incense & Candles is Prince's attempt at modern-day R&B and just sounds flat and contrived. Get On The Boat throws everything but the kitchen sink into the mix and still comes off sounding tired. Black Sweat is trying to re-create the magic of his 80s funk tracks driven by a pounding Lynn drum pattern but it lacks a decent hook and the nastiness that you need to get really funky.

I wouldn't bother with 3121 unless you want it for completist reasons as a collector. I'm a massive Prince fan and listen to his music all the time, but this album rarely comes off the shelf.

I am certainly "Satisfied" at "3121" with "Lolita" doing the "Black Sweat"!5

I am entirly impressed with this album, and is certainly on a rank with "Graffiti Bridge", "Sign "O" the Times", "Purple Rain", "Planet Earth" and "1999"
