Album Description
Vocalions proudly presents the very first re-issue of the entire 1973 LP 'All in an Afternoon's Work' by the mysterious Terry Cavendish Orchestra. A sought-after rarity in its original vinyl format, this thrilling album is an aural rollercoaster ride through some of the funkiest, hippest big band music to have emerged from British recording studios during the 1970s.
The album opens with the aggressive, hard-nosed funk of 'Leagueliner', a Ray Davies original complete with wah-wah guitar, a huge drum break and dynamic brass writing, reminding us that Ray is one of the most original and forward-looking big band composer-arrangers Britain has produced. Other highlights among many include the blistering up-tempo grooves of 'Organ Grinder's Swing' and 'Blue Lou', both showcasing the Hammond organ brilliance of the legendary Alan Hawkshaw (of KPM and 'The Mohawks' fame). In contrast is the loping rhythm of 'Moonglow', of which Ray's gorgeous scoring for alto flutes is a feature. The funk that pervades 'All in an Afternoon's' Work is courtesy of a world-class rhythm section consisting of bass guitarist Herbie Flowers and electric guitarist Alan Parker (both of KPM and 'Blue Mink' fame), and session legend Alf Bigden (drums). With players like these on board the only possible outcome is excellence.
Another major feature of Vocalion's re-issue of 'All in an Afternoon's Work' is the inclusion of seven additional tracks from the Cavendish library, many of them composed by Ray Davies. Recorded between 1972 and 1974, they include the moody, aggressive grooves of 'Hadrian's Wall' (which appeared on the Ray Davies Orchestra's 1974 PYE LP 'Benny and the Duke') and 'Monomania', plus the heavy-duty afro funk workout that is 'Issmak'. All are on CD for the first time and represent some of the most exciting music ever issued by this library series.
