Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Fair play ought to dictate that being a Radio 1 DJ should rather disqualify you from the process of being a popular recording artist, but little on this earth, it appears, is cut out to stop Zane Lowe. The Sound Inside marks Lowe’s return to Breaks Co-Op, the mid-90s breaks outfit he fronted alongside fellow New Zealander Hamish Clark. Those expecting the adrenaline-pumping delivery Lowe brings to the airwaves, however, will be comprehensively wrong-footed by this low-key, roots-flavoured offering. Inspired more by the honeyed soul of Marvin Gaye and the sun-baked Americana of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young than the more synthetic end of downtempo beat-making, much of The Sound Inside hinges on the timeless, soulful vocal of new collaborator Andy Lovegrove, whose dusty croon invigorates "The Otherside" and the swooning "Too Easily"--a homage to jazz trumpeter Chet Baker. There’s the occasional bland moment like "A Place For You", something you’d never expect from a motormouth like Lowe. Taken as an attempt to reconcile the gentle aural landscaping of trip-hop with a more organic, real-time feel, however, it’s a pleasant listen and a qualified success. --Louis Pattison

From the Label
Drawing from influences as diverse as Marvin Gaye and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young to Sebadoh and DJ Shadow, Anglo-New Zealand trio Breaks Co-Op release The Sound Inside, their stunning new album.

Originally formed in Auckland, NZ by Zane Lowe and Hamish Clark, the band released the electronic debut album Roofers in 1997 before leaving New Zealand to pursue other interests. After several years hiatus, Zane and Hamish eventually started working on new material in 2004, recruiting Andy Lovegrove from British artist/producers The Away Team after hearing a demo of him sing and deciding his was the voice born to sing their music.

Released last year in New Zealand, The Sound Inside has been a double-platinum selling hit, with lead single "The Otherside" the No.1 airplay hit of 2005 and winner of Song Of The Year at the NZ Music Awards.

An album of languid, hypnotic beauty, The Sound Inside combines live instrumentation and vocals with lovingly sourced samples to create a sound all of their own.

Customer Reviews

Excellent for chilling out to5
This album sat forlornly on my cd shelf after the first couple of listens. Then after hearing the beautiful, Eagles-like 'The Otherside' again on the radio recently, I started playing the album again and it has grown and grown on me since and is now a very firm favourite.

The songs are lovely, mellow or at times quite edgy, and explore a range of styles, from harmony rich songs, in the style of the Eagles, to dubb style and trip-hop (think Massive Attack). I think the diversity of styles they use could be perceived as a weakness of the album. Fans of chill-out might find tracks full of lavish harmonies and jaunty 70's-style melodies offputting - and vice-versa. They are paying homage to several genres, all very well, but they lack a uniqueness that would make them instantly recognisable.

Personally I love the diversity and richness of the songs. If you enjoy the Eagles, Zero 7, recent John Martyn (for example his 'And' album or Massive Attack, then give it a try, I think you will find much to enjoy...

Superb5
All I can say is this is the album Zero 7 will be wishing they made - Crosby Stills & Nash meets Ibiza sunset chillout - just put it on and relax..... nowt else to be said...

OUTSTANDING, Beauitful on the ears!!!5
It's about time someone made an album that was real music. With Andy Lovegrove's tremendous talent they can't go wrong!!! With beautiful relaxing harmonies that send you to the "feel good" zone, the album is totally additive!

I have seen these guys play live and they sound as good as the album, how many band these days can say that!! These guys really do have natural talent.

I love this album and can't stop playing it. Buy it.... you won't be disappointed, but make sure you don't lend it to anybody as you might not get it back (Mike can I have my copy back please!!)

Best of luck guys, I am sure your going all the way to the top!!!
