Synopsis
This stellar Broadway play from Arthur Laurent, Jule Styne, and Stephen Sondheim ranks as one of the great pieces of American musical theatre. The play and the subsequent film feature the enormously popular 'Everything Is Coming Up Roses' and also includes 'Small World', 'All I Need Is The Girl', 'You Gotta Have A Gimmick', 'Let Me Entertain You', 'Broadway, Broadway', and a half dozen others. The story follows the life of Rose Louise Hovick, the infamous queen of burlesque. Mama Rose, played by Rosalind Russell, propelled by the fame she never achieved, is determined to make her two daughters vaudeville stars whether they like it or not. Her bets rest with the older daughter, June, until June strikes off on her own, putting all the pressure on Louise (Natalie Wood), who isn't particularly interested in her mother's aspirations. At the same time, the world of vaudeville is decaying slowly around them, with many of the stages turning to burlesque acts. In a spontaneous move, Louise creates her own strip show onstage, and even though Louise doesn't display any skin, the act catches on fire. Actresses Russell and Wood pull off the difficult dramatic roles, but the real charm of the film rests in the excellent soundtrack.

5 star movie, 1 star DVD
I was looking forward to receiving the newly released version of Gypsy. Great songs, cinematography etc. However I was very disappointed.
Beware this disc is NOT widescreen, but pan and scanned from a very poor original negative, unlike the region 1 release. Hard to believe that with the emergence of widescreen TVs etc. that DVDs are released in anything other than letterbox format these days. A missed opportunity to release a definitive region 2 release.
Horrible dvd edition!
Yes it's true, and I wish I didn't do a quick shopping spree and read at least the specs (where the format is missing btw) and the reviews.
It is indeed a full screen presentation of a horrible totally washed-out print.
YOu know when you watch completely remastered movies and then you watch the extras like the original trailer, which usually doesn't get remastered? Or when you see Restoration Comparisons in Fox movies? Well, this is the BEFORE version you are getting. It's THAT bad!
This print hasn't been touched in more than 20 years for sure.
I wish I had bought the US dvd. You should too.
Great Film, but DVD quality not as great!
Don't get me wrong, the film is excellent, but the DVD quality is not very good! They must have used an old print as the colour is sometimes faded, the sound patchy and you see the usual old marks and scratches you get in old film. I wish that the makers would clean it up and THEN it would be perfect!
