Manufacturer's Description
The Megapixel MVX460, with DV and AV input, is optimized for true 16:9 recording. It features a widescreen LCD, 20x optical zoom, direct printing and additional still image capture with DIGIC DV. The lightweight Megapixel MVX460 combines advanced camcorder and digital camera functions. True widescreen recording delivers stunning vibrant images, no matter what and how you're shooting. Optimised for true 16:9 shooting, the MVX460 captures high-resolution widescreen pictures. With a 2.7" widescreen colour LCD screen that includes a level marker to line up the horizon, as well as a colour viewfinder, movies are perfect for watching back on widescreen TVs. At the push of a button, the camcorder can be switched from 16:9 wide to normal 4:3 shooting. The camcorder performs to the highest optical standards thanks to a powerful 20x optical zoom lens that has Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and variable zoom speeds. DV and AV input allow greater creative control. With DV input, video that has been uploaded to a computer for editing can be re-recorded back to miniDV cassette in the camcorder. With analogue-to-digital conversion possible via AV input, even old home movies can be transferred to digital tape for archiving. With Canon's powerful DIGIC DV imaging engine, the camcorder has separate processing paths for video and stills. Colours remain vivid and vibrant no matter what kind of image you're shooting and simultaneous video and still capture is also possible. Compatible with PictBridge printers, it's easy to get digital photographs out of the camcorder and onto paper. With a single push of the Print/Share button, images can be either sent to a printer or uploaded to a computer via Hi Speed USB. With a re-designed control layout, the camcorder's menu is navigated via an easy-to-use joystick. Using the wireless controller, movies can even be shot from in front of, and not behind, the lens. The camcorder's Night Mode white LED makes shooting without light a real possibility, illuminating even the darkest occasions and capturing the moment to tape. The MVX460 comes ready supplied with a 0.75x wide attachment for wide-angle shooting in both 16:9 and 4:3 modes. The MVX460 comes ready supplied with powerful software tools for managing both stills and video footage. The software bundle includes ZoomBrowser (Windows) and ImageBrowser (Mac).

Customer Reviews
Great piece of kit
We have been looking for a decent, but reasonably price DV camcorder for a while.
As a bit of a Canonophile, I was disappointed by the reviews of other of their products, as well as finding the MV450 that my wide uses at school less practical than other brands. I was about to guy a Panasonic, until I saw some good reviews of the US version of the MVX460 and I bought it almost as soon as it made it into the UK last month
The 2 elements that particularly sold me on this camcorder were the widescreen format and the external microphone jack - these seem to be functions not available on other camcorders in this price range.
We used the camera over the easter holiday and have been impressed by its ease of use.
Things that stand out:
- exremely small and light, but not fiddly
- quick start up
- controls easy to use and fall under fingers
- good battery life (although the battery is hidden inside the camera, so difficult to change, this has not been a problem)
- clever inbuilt lens-cap
- great image quality and decent sound from the built-in microphone (not tried external yet)
- quick tape spool
- nice joystick menu and function control, very easy to use
Slight negatives:
- wide angle is not very wide
- low light is still a bit of an issue (maybe we had not got the camera set up correctly)
We have started to take video again, after being disappointed with our previous hi-8 camcorder, so a big step up - good news so far and still a lot more to investigate
canon mvx460
i bought this camcorder several days ago and i am very pleased with it. its very small and sits comfortably in your hand it has a 20x optical zoom which is very good for this size of camera, i was most impressed with the close up shots that can be taken with this camera,it will focus down to about 10 mm which is very close indeed.it was very easy to setup and use, iwas recording within 5 minutes out of the box.the menus are easily found and controlled by the joystick at the rear of the camera. all controls fall easily to hand, the picture quality is excellent one of the best i have ever seen.you also get a wide angle attachment with this camera which allows you to get more into the picture, very handy for indoor shots at birthday parties etc i also liked the fact that the tape was loaded from the side and not underneath like some which is a nuisance if you have a tripod bracket on as you sometimes have to remove the bracket to change the tape.overall an excellent camera with easy controls, large optical zoom small light built in for dark shots, sits easy in the hand ,very light and easy to use.highly recommended.
for beginners......
I've never had a camcorder before and only used old fashioned clunky things in the past so after a lot of research I bought this one, mostly because it's a Canon and we've always been pleased with our Canon cameras in the past, and it shares the software our digital camers uses. It's also neat, light and compact and fits in a dinky Lowepro digicam bag for travel.
It was very easy to set up and start using, after the 2.5 hour initial battery charge, and the controls are fairly intuitive. It's very simpleto connect to the TV to view, but I'm still learning about transferring to the computer. I naively thought the USB port would enable this, but this is only the case if you've recorded onto an SD card. For editing from the miniDV tape I seem to need a DV cable and a DV terminal or card for my PC - then I can play around freely with the editing software.
On the downside it's not great in low light, but the lamp does improve things and as long as your subject isn't moving too fast the night mode makes a big difference.
It would also be a big plus if the built in lens cap automatically closed when you switch off......
