ATLAS was established by the Alliance of Nations as part of a secret provision under the Articles of Independence. Its purpose: To provide an independent organization funded by all of the allied nations with the authority to carry out intelligence gathering and combat actions against those enemy forces that legitimate governments could not combat or would not acknowledge.

ATLAS, our operations and our goals have and shall always remain covert in nature. Field Commander is the first military turn-based strategy game for PSP and the only title that offers engaging, challenging skill based warfare in a realistic military setting. You play as a Field Commander working for an independent organization established by the Allied Nations to defend the world against an evil terrorist organization bent on inciting wars, illicit arms deals and global domination.

Command the land, skies and sea. Orchestrate an offensive attack through 30 unique missions, each one coming alive in beautiful 3D environments with highly-detailed terrain and dynamic visual effects. With an arsenal of 15 army divisions and 11 commanding officers to choose from, the power is yours to outwit the enemy at every turn.

Better than Advance Wars on par with Fire Emblem
I've always been a fan of the Fire Emblem series but never really cared for Advance Wars series Gameboy or DS versions, I'm not saying that Advance Wars 1, 2 or Dual Strike are bad games, on the contrary they're great fun but I've always been a bit put off by the characters and the slightly kiddy feel.
Thanks to Field Commander, Sony have put together a great little package made good on a lot of the quirky Advance Wars features.
The graphics are far superior to Advance Wars, the story is good and the game is really easy to pick up and play.
Another great advantage of Field Commander over Advance Wars is credability. Infantry (grunts as the are referred to in the game) have little impact when up against a tank, unlike Advance Wars where all sorts of unrealistic things seem to happen.
As I said before the game is very easy to pick up and the quick fire tutorials are straight forward and allow you to get to grips with the different type of equipment at your disposal i.e gunships, battleships, tanks, half-tracks and a variety of different types of infantry ranging from grunts to snipers which can be stealth enabled (this is a great little feature when preparing an ambush).
To conclude I would say this game is a MUST BUY if you like strategy games. In fact I would go as far as to say that even if you don't like strategy games you'll probably really enjoy this game anyway it's so well put together with short loading times.

Second only to Syphon Filter Dark Mirror in my PSP game chart for 2006. Can't wait for Field Commander 2.

Leaden Trudgery
The benchmark for all handheld strategy games is the Advance Wars series on the various Nintendo platforms.

Field Commander doesn't come close.

The units are practically invisible on the terrain, making selection and movement particularly troublesome, and the whole pace of the game is leaden, with the camera zooming in to the landscape for every battle. The battles are resolved quickly, but after a few dozen panning zooms, it really is redundant.

There are some nice multimedia elements that the Advance Wars series doesn't have, but there is a huge hole in the gameplay where the fun should be.

The whole experience is like trudguing to Moscow through the winter snow.

There may be very few alternatives on the PSP right now, but you'd be better to fire up LocoRoco and have some fun whilst waiting for Final Fantasy tactics or some other turn based game to make it onto your favourite portable.

Great Game but bad online service !
Hi,

This is a great game, especially for strategy buff's, you dont have a better game than this. There is nothing better than playing this game online with another human. The AI is ok, you can beat it easily. The greatness of the game is the thrill of playing your opponent online via Infra mode or Transmission mode (Great for people like me with a baby and hard job).

But...please check the status of Sony servers through the official forums. The online service of SoE is pathetic. Most times they are down or full of bugs which makes you forcably loose games you are winning.

I'd still say, "BUY IT" !
