Customer Reviews

Not as exceptional as the first one but still very fine.4
Four years after the 1st vol. of this "Spirit of Philadelphia" series, Ralph Tee has compiled another great stock of rare or quite unknown philly soul gems. Some are very fine and hard-to find cuts like the 12" version of Gateway's "Can't accept the fact" or David Morris "Midnight lady" but overall the selection might have been slightly better (e.g. I'm still waiting to find the Fantastic Johnny C's cult cut "Don't depend on me" on CD). Also there are too much album cuts in my opinion and not enough rare 7". I would have liked also to find more Baker, Harris & Young productions on this compilation and especially some cuts arranged by the great Norman Harris or by Ronnie Baker. That would probably have earned this compilation its fifth star.

Nevertheless this excellent compilation well deserves a four-star rating and I recommend it very much for any fan of the philadelphia sound. Philly veteran Vince Montana's "That what love does" alone is worth the price of the entire CD !

If you don't already own the first volume of this series, it's a must-buy that I rated five stars when it was issued in 2002.
