Sony's new sleek and slender DVP-NS36 DVD player features built-in MP3 decoding, DVD-R/DVD-RW, DVD+R/DVD+RW (video mode), Kodak picture CD playback and support for DivX. With Sony's Precision Drive3 system you'll get a picture that is more faithful to the source, video or film, and virtually free of errors that warped discs can produce. High-quality image playback is facilitated using a 12bit/108Mhz Video; while SCART and composite video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

The DVP-NS36 automatically plays data DVDs containing MP3 files and JPEG image files. By searching the disc for available files. Viewing JPEG files can be done by selecting the appropriate image album you wish to view, and can then be viewed individually or via a slideshow, with the added option of displaying the date on which the photo was taken. When JPEG image files and MP3 audio tracks are placed in the same album, you can enjoy a slideshow with sound.

The on-board 192 kHz 24-bit digital-to-analogue audio converter ensures optimum decoding of all disc formats. A Dolby DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signal can be routed through the player's optical digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. If you don't have a surround receiver or six-channel speaker setup, you can still make every movie night the ultimate experience: When you connect a stereo TV or 2 front speakers, Sony's TVS (TV Virtual Surround) lets you enjoy surround sound effects by using sound imaging to create virtual rear speakers. TVS was developed by Sony to produce surround sound for home use using just a stereo TV.

Playback options include quick set-up, disc resume, DVD/CD Text, custom parental control memory, Advanced Smooth Scan and Smooth Slow Modes, instant replay and instant search. You can set two kinds of playback restrictions for a disc, Custom Parental Control which enables you to set playback restrictions so that the player will not play inappropriate discs and Parental Control where playback of some DVD videos can be limited according to a predetermined level such as the of the users. Scenes may be blocked or replaced with different scenes. The same password is used for both Parental Control and Custom Parental Control.

Supplied accessories include a remote control that operates the DVD player and many brands of television. The remote makes chapter select easy, by just pressing the number button of the chapter you wish to play. You can control the sound level, input source, and power of many brands televisions by using the remote.

Sleek and sexy
If you need a DivX DVD player this ticks pretty much all the boxes. I've chucked a mixture of CD and DVD-Rs and a variety of DivX files at it, and it's played everything effortlessly. Good scaling/sound features and a great menu system that allows you to see chapter screenshots at a glance. It also looks pretty good out of the box, and has an easy to navigate remote.

As long as you don't need HDMI outputs (i.e. you don't have a hi-def telly) then this comes highly recommended.

P.S. The player isn't multi-region capable out of the box, but can be chipped at your local sony shop (for about thirty quid) or at your local phone/hi-fi repair store, for probably about a tenner.

Very happy with the dvd player
I got this machine to replace an older Sony model which I had purchased in 2001. At that time my old machine was one of the top of the market models, but when it comes down to it now, it did near enough the same as this unit I have bought from amazon.
Within 5 minutes of receiving my new dvd player I had it set up & playing dvd's on my tv. I have tried it out & have made sure it plays all of my discs, which include Regions 2, 0 & 4. It also plays my collection of dvdr titles no problem.
I am thoroughly happy with my purchase & I would certainly recommend Sony products to people, most of my appliances are either Sony or Toshiba, & I have never had any problems with them.

A great DVD Player
This DVD player is excellent. I wanted a player that would play my DVD-R's which I had recorded on my Toshiba Recordable Player and they work a treat. It is very simple to use. Slightly too large but apart from that it is brilliant.
