Awesome.
I have just listened to this album once and have never heard anything like it. The intensity and beauty are indescribable. It has honestly floored me. Fans of breakcore / electronica, forward thinking / advanced / innovative music need to listen to this.
Impressive stuff from Russia
Amen Orchestra is Russian Nizhny Novgorod and 17 Waves is his highly impressive debut outing.
To imagine the sound of this album take Aphex Twin's Girl/Boy Song from the Richard D. James LP as a starting point, then imagine the orchestration sounding much more like it has been recorded live before being cut up and overlayed with beats akin to Squarepusher in his Hard Normal Daddy phase, recent Venetian Snares or Aphex on the heavier moments from Druqks and you've got a fair idea what to expect.
This is an intense release, in fact it's fair to say that at times the album can be overwhelming thanks to the sheer density and intensity of the sound flowing from the speakers. From the 9 minute opening of 16th Wave you're given a crash course in what Amen Orchestra is all about, all wonky orchestral melodies and heavy, fast beats. On other words it's fantastic. Other stand out tracks include Temp6HWZ69O, Noan Ame 17 and Maq 7.1419, the first being a 90 second joy, the latter two similar to 16th Wave in size and content.
Even the album's quiter moments, Mutitled 2 and Hisp, don't let up in the intensity, the latter could be the soundtrack to a horror movie that really should get made.
All in all this is up there with Body Riddle by Clark as electronic releases of the year and wipes the floor with Squarepusher's rather weak recent effort. If you found that album a bit too light then you really should give this a go.
